I got the wood cut at home depot (3/4") MDF. It was not that hard to do, but the cuts from home depot were not very good. The wood pieces were not square...
So I have some cracks in the box, Can I just seal it up with silicone? I used Goop silicone glue, which has never let me down before, but its expensive, any other alternatives? I saw liquid nails & stuff, but didnt know which type to buy!
Also, Even though I pre-drilled the screw holes, I guess I didnt go down far enough & the MDF split, so I too the screw out & put some glue over the split section, is this ok to do? Or do I have to start over?
The box is for an IDMAX 12".

silicone would work ok i guess. i always use wood glue between the joints and then after screwed together i use liquid nail to sell up every edge. you must not have drilled the holes wide enough.ive never had a spliting big problem, but ive never took the time to drill i just screwed it down and made sure i was centered when screwing it together. heard of some people that fiberglass the inside or under coating, ive even heard bondo being used. unless you have a true killer sub that would rip the box apart i wouldnt worry about it

Heh, I don't even use screws. I just use wood glue on all the joints, and then Shoot brads in to hold the boards untill the glued dries. Seal them and go. Never had a problem yet, and it's much easier that drilling the holes.

o ya. first box i built i made it outta 1/2mdf and used alot of wood glue and liquid nail, and then just some trim nails and well droped the kicker comp vr 15 and it tore that ported box to hell. within 5min of playing it was forced open!!!! put some screws in it and sealed it up again and then it worked great. still flexed alittle since it wasnt that thick but worked great and out lived the sub.LOL

If they arent giant gaps...wood filler on outside and silicone on the inside...also for cracked MDF...I inject glue into the crack then clamp it for a day and its good as new

back to your post tho... u shouldn't have to restart. glue should help hold the split just fine...clamp the split for a couple hours and the glue should hold.
as long as the screw is centered in the wood, it shouldn't split too awfully bad. liquid nails would solve the problem of the gaps. i think it is stronger then silicone for that purpose.

Wood filler or wood glue will work on the splits in the MDF. What I usually do is take a little bit of Titebond wood glue and mix some MDF dust into it and make a paste and apply it into the cracks.. it works great! Posts: 101 | From: Paris, TX USA | Registered: May 2001
