ok i just got a kenwoond 929 running 2 type-r's for christmas. installed it the 26th. ive had 2 4.5" elcipse speakers in front and 2 5.5" eclipse speakers in back for about 3 months with an alpine 7875 hu. maybe a month after i got the speakers and alpine i was playin a bass song with the 'bass forward' off and bass all the way up and i got a burning smell so i immediately put the bass levels to what i normally have (bass forward is +1 which turns off the other bass adjustment).
today i was playin some project pat with bass forward +1 and i got the smell again but not as stong. this is the part i dont get: 1st, the volume was only on 18 for the song. ive played this song tons of times with the volume up to 23 without any problems. i dont know if my voice coils could have been burning cuz these are my first subs so i dont know what that would smell like. a competant shop installed all my stuff so i dont think a bad install would be the problem. would anyone like to comment on this situation?

It is possible that you are burning a voice coil.Do your speakers still have sound coming out of them?If so try and find out where the smell is coming from.

I have had this occur a couple times for me. I was playing "Who Run It?" by 3-6 Mafia and it was cranked all the way up, and I started to smell the coils of the 3" woofer on the 4x6 plates started to smell, so i eased of the volume and the smell went away. It has come and gone a couple times if you play it too loud for too long. Now I don't have those plates hooked up, and haven't had a problem with just the 6.5's in the door.

Once the insulation on the voice coil begins to melt, which sounds to be the case here, the turns will short themselves out. This isn't too bad in itself, but if your vc has any shorted turns, it'll melt more easily now, force the amp to give out more current and yet more heat. The only thing you can do is keep a close nose on that sub.
