I have ripped at 64kBps for my portable unit, and with earphones, it sounds fine however I was wondering when it comes to playing them in the car, which I haven't done yet, what is generally a good speed to copy at? I was going to rip them at 128kBps, is this high enough, too high, just right?

The idea was to shrink the size of the collection that I have to carry with me. I have two full books of CD's, and I would like to cut it down as much as possible, otherwise

The idea was to shrink the size of the collection that I have to carry with me. I have two full books of CD's, and I would like to cut it down as much as possible, otherwise I don't see much point in burning them. My program that I have allows me to use 192kBps, so that's what I use, that still allows me to fit 7-8 CD's on one disk, reducing my load by over 80%, so that's what I am going to do. I haven't listened to them on my car's stereo yet, but have on the sudio system in my home and it sounds fine to me. Thanks for the opinions though. I'm glad I didn't make them any smaller though.

Well, for portable players, around 64kbps will be fine. But for better audio systems that is garbage, lol. 320kbps is overkill in my opinion. 192kbps is perfect, but the best is a variable bitrate. Closest to CD quality you can get with the mp3 format.
