I am aproached 10 -15 times a week for sponsorship and 90% of the time, the person is unprepared to discuss his accomplishments, future plans and product needs.
Do your homework on the potential sponsors products. Go to their web site and research the products you may require for your vehicle. A manufacturer does not have time to review an entire catalogue of products.
Don't ask them to design your system for you. They will be happy to help you refine your needs or offer a better mix and match set-up.
Atleast narrow it down to a couple of choices.
Sponsors are always impressed when you know their products.
Don't make, "how much" your first question.

And don't ask for 3x the amount of stuff you actually need to do the car.

Make sure for big shows, that you have a nice looking install. Something to show off. companies most likely won't want there stuff installed and looking like a dog **** on it.

Compete and see if it really is for you! Nothing is free, have to pay 1 way or another.

Make sure you actually want a sponsorship. Are willing to stick with that company even if what you later to perceive as a better product comes around? Read the entire sponsorship agreement, and make sure you are able to and willing to do the things they request.
Sometimes it is better just to pay for it yourself. Especially, as was said above, once you consider that the product cost is a drop in the bucket of what you will spend on a quality install.

One more handy thing, show loyalty to the company BEFORE you ask for sponsorship. Obviously actually owning and competing with products from that company already shows that you are serious. Also, the sponsorship season usually starts in Janurary, so put proposals in before then.
