I dont really wanna do the fiberglass and sanding then paint. Can I just spray it on the wood and be ok?
If paint makes the mdf swell then would spray on bedliner work?

if you spray it down a few times, it will act as a primer then go over it with a brush or roller it can come out with a shiny texture

wood will soak up paint...use epoxy sealant? latex primer? use something or you'll find yourself painting 3 - 4 times and the wood will still soak it up.

So some kind of a primer will be best to put down first.
How will the look of the box be affected by just painting it after a primer, compared to the resin then paint?

putting resin on a box makes it appear smooth but you'll be sanding ALOT especially if doing an entire box.

Just hit it with a few coats of high build primer and sand it back with around 400 grit and then spray and clear....don't use a single gloss paint, it looks alot better with the 2 stage

Paint act as primer, only if you use some very specialized coatings which paint to you refer to?

I always use a water sealer first, because it really soaks in and fills up the pores. Then I use a latex primer followed with several coats of an oil based high gloss finish. Let the box dry well and sand good between each coat.

SIMPLE....Use Filler Primer like you would when working with fiberglass. Sprays on. Another hint, prime and paint with an automotive paint-sprayer. Use a Gravity feed sprayer if necessary.
Wet sanding is good. Just remember, MDF will absorb anything that is left liquid on the surface too long, use thin coats. Sand excessively. Try a nice quality paint and clear coats afterwards. The mdf will lose strength and soften, maybe go 2 layers of mdf. Use a paint additive the helps the paint flex, like when painting a car's bumper.

This is all non-sense...why would you ever want to paint over MDF?

Wrap it in aluminum foil...believe me it sounds good!

Seriously, if you could get the laffy taffy to stay attached it would work good...not only would it smell fruity, look colorful, and be edible, but it would also act as a sound deadener. SPLAudio...

I have painted my box with a house paint primer, and it worked great.
I have also take a spray can of black paint (I believe rust paint), and it looks good. Just do 2-4 coats, and it will be shinny and nice.

Oil-based primers work best. MDF will soak up the water from latex-based primers and paints.
