Is there anything special I have to do to install a headunit in a 97 Volkswagon Jetta? I know the factory unit has a flashing LED for the alarm, and says something about theft but is it part of the security system?

no factory amps on 97 Jettas, at least I've never seen one here in mexico, and where I have my shp, 70 percent of the cars we have worked on, have been VW Jettas, Gols, Cabrios, Pointers....etc.......

to properly installa HU on that jetta, i would advise you to remove part of the dash instead of just trying to remove de HU......
start by removing the small plastic flaps that the dash has and are there to conceal the screws holdin the uppert part of the dash
remove de Ligthing controls by using your finger, on the left, top, inner side, there is a small lever, must push it in, and the controls will pop uot easily....
remoe de AC vents to acces the other two screws holding the panel, use a flat head screwdriver and very carefully pry it out from one side....

yeah your right its the newer jettas that might have the factory amp. but ive never heard of removing parts of the dash to remove the headunit all u need is the vw keys slide them in the slots and pull out.
