Yep they were sealed. I had VERY little knowledge about car audio at the time. The installer at the shop said that was the only way they would fit. The first three installed were MTX. I couldn't figure this out because I paid for three solo's. I then waited 2 weeks for the Kicker subs to come in. After one blew, I took them out and discovered they were all 8ohm. I now hate them, and am very weary of "shops" in general. I could go on but it was the past.
All that to say I now know it was enclosure design coupled with the subs being underpowered. I love Kicker products and would never talk poorly about them. After rereading what I posted, it sounded bad. I apologize for that.
Audiostylz2000, I was concerned with output with the use of a single driver. Still not out of consideration. I can spring for the HO alternator and one extra battery if I need to in order to power two drivers.
tprj82, I would love to be in the 140's with the new system. In addition, I have had a very good overall experience with Kicker. They were able to swap out my blown sub and the others and upgrade to the 4ohm versions on the spot. The shop was awesome as well.
On to the search.....
I like the Alpine IVA-D901. I had planned on a huge chunk of the cash to go to the H/U. To be honest, $4K is a hair low. I have $4500 and change. The Eclipse H/U didn't have as many options and has a lower resolution screen for around the same money. Nice though, very nice. Any other ideas for H/U's, please post up.
Now for the sub amp/amps....

Digital Designs do not have amplifiers on the market. Resonant Engineering do have amps in their future plans but, they have yet been tested in the competition arena.
Also, you dont know exactly what this guy has in mind for a system, if its SQ or SPL geared.
If i had $4,000 to spend in car audio gear it would be:
Eclipse 3443 HeadUnit Focal Utopia 3 ways Zapco amps (4 channel/2channel) RE XXX12" sub (only 1)
Just my 2 cents.
x2, only I would rather have a Premier DEH-860. And I'd get Image Dynamics chameleons (sp?) for the 3ways...Zapco amps are nice but get better speakers and Orion amps, I hear they're just as nice almost. Subs and sub amp are debatable based upon what you want. If you want all out SQ and sorta L, then get like 2 Image Dynamics IDQ 10's, and a nice class A/B amp for them. If you want loud, get 2 DD 9515's and like 4 lanzar optidrive 2000d's, 1 on each coil (you would need the 1 ohm coil 9515's). If you want a combination of both, get 2 12" H2's and a Orion 2500d, or 2 XXX's, or 2 Brahmas (or 1)...there are a few more, but can you please specify what the balance of SQ / SPL you are looking for is? And what type of music this will be used for, etc? It will help greatly.
Certainly. I really want both. I am not going to be competing so I don't need a 155db power house. But high 140's while retaining excelent SQ. I suppose a 50/50 if that translates. This is why I am gravitating tward the XXX or Brahma.
packerfan, I have always been impressed with ID. I have never heard thier chameleon components. Also are the ED amps reliable as well as suited for SQ/SPL applications? I also have never seen or heard these.

Maybe I should try a different route. New question. What would you do with $4K and a 01 Nissan Maxima if a customer/client asked you for what I am.
1.SQ/SPL. 2.AV-DVD/PS2/All audio formats. 3.2-12's or 1'15. 4.Kicks, front, and rear doors with sound. 5.Leave a little room out back for my suitcase.
Dream something up. What would you do under these sircumstanses?
Thanks and have fun with this. I need a ton of input.

knowing a little about maxima, i would deffently say start out with upgrading that alternator because thats probably going to be one of the most diffecult time consuming part. running new wires, and finding a custom built unit for it. it may take $300-$500. but it will really be worth it. i have ran high power systems on stock 90 amp alternators in my maxima, and my infiniti j30. but you can really tell the difference having the extra amperage, im sure my system would be much louder with a real alternator, but what i have keeps my batteries charged, and i dont always listen to my system at high levels... anyways if your sticking to a trunk setup i would hope your rear seats fold down, unless you want to get into a real customizing with a sealed off setup, i would just fire towards the rear if the seats fold down. i know my maxima didnt fold just the arm rest. i ported my rear deck, but i had the 1990 maxima. anyways,
you could probably get a 5-6 cube box in the trunk and still have a little extra for bass to travel out of the trunk easly. 12inch xxx would be nice, so would a pair of 15s, personnaly if i had that kind of money, sense i love my eclipse ti pro so much i would get 2 of those 12s or 15. and i picked my 15 up for just $400. also they only need about 2.5-3 cubes each for the 12 and 3-4.5 cubes each for the 15s, ported. and i run 4000 watts to mine daily no problem. as for amps you could probably save some money and get an amp for each sub. im sure if you looked hard enough you could get 5000-6000 watts total for around $1000, and 2 eclipse ti pro, 4hp for around $1200. that would be deffently enough to get close to a 150 out of a trunk car and still be a good daily driver, as for you setup i would stay using the trunk because you will get good lows, because of the extra room the bass wave has to expand.
my setup is way under $4000, probably more around $2000 and its great for what i need, i also have a touch screen car computer, which is actually just a tablet pc. my mids and highs are not up to par yet with the rest of my system, but thats why im less then $2000, my next upgrades will be mids and highs.
like said above a good 3 way set with about 300-500 watts would be nice up front, i would power it with a good us amps, zapco, old school xtant, or old school ppi amp. then have a nice 2 way set for your rears powered off another smaller matching amp. also if your doing video i would get a nice center channel speaker and seperate amp.

Hmm..the way I see it $4K system: Labor @ $50/hr (avg custom price) 40 hrs* $50 = $2000!!! Wow..thats half your budget right there...time to shop for deals. Honestly the install can make or break a system. It all depends on what you want the outcome to be. You can spend more on the install and less on gear or vise versa...In the end its you who you have to please. I wish you luck.
PS...My tastes lean toward a 5.1 audio/video system...SQL ain't bad
