Then everyone lowers their prices and the market for car audio bottoms out... Just like it has pretty much done for computers. Not that it isn't nice to save money but you gotta look at the big picture and the long run.

The demand is not an issue and the market is not going anywhere but up - if prices are lowered more people will enter the markets in which they could not have entered before - multimedia, video, SPL, multi amp/sub, additional accessories. You can't tell me teh bottom would fall out of mobile DVD if the price was cut in half or more. DVDs are fast making VCRs a thing of the past (can we say beta), home DVD players can be had for $75 now. Does that mean no one will buy Sony or Pioneer players, no way but their marketing strategy sure will change. Dealers could use a dose of online reality IMO. I also think Manufacturers shouldembrace the online market - if not a product will come along that does embrace online sales and that is equally as good technology wise and force them to.
There is a unbelieveable market for computers and computer parts - biggest it has ever been in fact. Computer manufacturers have embraced online sales and know that it is the way in which educated individuals shop for parts. It is coming like it or not - why pay a middle man.

Saving money is great but skipping the middle man is gonna leave him without a job and enough of that will also hurt the economy
Not to burst your bubble, but go to pricewatch, in the upper right click on electronics, then car stereo. But I dont think they have most of the sites that we shop at listed. Who knows.
