i know, i know, this subject is always talked about. but why is clipping that bad. say your sub can handle 1000 watts, and your amp is 250 watts. if you clip your amp, why is that so bad. i know that it will not sound good. why are those square sound waves so bad.

more power puts out more heat....clipping puts out a more square signal instead of a sine wave, and so it's putting out more heat than the sine wave....i wish i had a graph to show you what i'm talking about...but basically a clipped signal puts out more heat and fries the sub

even though square wavs allow less cooling its still not every significant

i remember a post a couple months ago that was all about clipping, they said that distortion cannot blow a sub, just heat alone. so square waves really do produce that much more heat. so if i had a 1000 watt sub, i could kill it will a 200 watt amp.

A 200 watt RMS amp can put out a max of 400 watts of power at full clipping. 400 watts will not kill a sub that can take 1000 watts. Now if you had a 750 watt RMS amp, it could kill a 1000 watt sub thermally. FYI, well over 90% of the power delivered to a sub is dissipated as heat.
