After receiving 6 packages in 2 weeks, 2 where damaged I started to look for an alternative. So 1/3 of my packageds where damaged! I always thought Fedex was more expensive, I shipped some 38lb 15's half way across the country for 9.68 each using fedex ground today, which ins't bad at all. It's much cheaper. I just don't understand why almost everybody else uses UPS?

UPS damaged some subs of mine last time I used it. I usually just use the Post Office because it's cheaper. FedEx has always been more than UPS for me....
US Airborne Express is good too. Very good package handling and excellent service!

As an employee of UPS, I'll tell you that as long as the package is packed properly, there shouldn't be any damage. Now, if someone just throws something in a box without making sure it won't move around, your stuff will likely get messed up. I unload trucks, and we have to hustle so alot of the times alot of packages aren't handled with the care they deserve. I think any place will be like this, no matter what route you use. I always try to handle all packages with care, because I get alot of stuff from UPS and I handle packages like they were mine, but alot of people don't. So, my only advice is to make sure your stuff is packed up nice and tight, because chances are your package won't be handled with the care it deserves.

I agree with Josh, make sure your items are packed well. I load boxes at UPS and am always flying so package care tends not to be top notch. Use lots of tape when wrapping boxes also. My advice is to tape every seam on the box. All corners and bends in the box...TAPE!!!

Trust me, it is not the packing, everything was packed excellent, I will post some pictures soon of the audiobahn 1505x I received a while back.... the woodcrate was busted all up... I couldn't even beleive it. UPS sucks a fatty

You shipped a 38 lb. Speaker for less than $10 ?? I've had to ship a few things these past two weeks and I notice some major differences. Shipping UPS a 9 lb. box to the West Coast was about $17. I just shipped a box about 25 pounds using the post office from Wisconsin to Missouri for about $21. And the biggest one of all, I had to ship a 9 lb. box to London: UPS and FedEx would cost me $65 uninsured and $75 insured, I then went to the post office and it cost me only $19 uninsured and $29 insured.
Why such a big price difference?? I go through Mailboxes Etc. when I use UPS or FedEx. Could that be why?
All of my complaints are about UPS. I can understand crushed corners but holes through the side and boxes ripped open are a concern. FedEx boxes have arrived in perfect shape so far.

I use UPS because it is headquartered here in Atlanta. I can ship anywhere in the US and it gets there in 2 business days. I even shipped a package to Oregon and it got there in 2 days. I have also shipped a 9515 and it cost me a big $18 with $500 in insurance. I just make sure to package all my stuff real well.
I have noticed that anything overseas is cheaper with USPS than with UPS or Fed Ex though.

Well Josh, you are mistaken.
As A CUSTOMER of OOPS (UPS), I can say the OOPS earned their name in the package damaging industry. I have a few packages that had a forklift tine run through them, and was told, "..You didn't package it properly.." When inquiring to OOPS, "what the he!! do you want me to do, bulletproof it?" they proceeded to deny the claim for insurance.
I've been to the customer counter (when I got a packaged done too late for pick up) and when they were done charging me for it, they proceeded to TOSS the package down a slope onto a conveyer line. This package overshot the converyer, and proceeded to smack on the floor. I made the CC rep bring the package back to me, we inspected it, and it was dented in on 3 of 8 corners!!!!!!! At that time, I demanded to get a refund, and that's the last time I've dealt with OOPS.
I still receive packages from them, but refuse anything that is damaged visibly. Cliff Claven (USPS) doesn't have this problem, and they are faster, and for consumers, cheaper. I use FedEx ground as well, but they are lousy when it comes to living up to their insurance claims as well.
I agree with 4banger, I don't know why anyone else uses OOPS either.

I worked for a Customs Broker/freight forwarder for nearly 7 years. In my experience, Fedex is usually more expensive, BUT when it has to be done right, go Fedex. We received a monitor via UPS, it was smashed. They sent a replacement, it too got smashed. I wasn't impressed with UPS' package handling skills. Also, and this is just kinda funny, I was at the local car audio shop the other day. One of the guys who works there gets a phone call from UPS "Hi, we have a COD package for you" my friend: "Oh, I wasn't expecting it yet. I have to go get the money order" UPS: "well, why don't you just come over here afterward and pick it up?"
Now, somebody correct me if I am wrong here, pretty much what UPS does is DELIVER stuff????
This friend of mine gets stuff from them all the time at teh shop, but now, they wanted him to come get it? We all found it odd.

I don't know why you all say Fedex is more expensive, even go to the UPS and Fedex websites and punch in a few different senarios, Fedex ground is Always cheaper.

I work as a freight analyst for a major customer of all three. I would say of the three I would use USPS first. Then Fedex. I am currently in the proccess of switching all of our current volume from UPS to Fedex. I deal with 50 to 100 calls a day from UPS about damaged packages. And they always claim it was our fault improper packaging. All we do all day long is package items to be shipped. On average we ship 150,000 packages in two 8 hour shifts. No problems from Fedex. No problems from USPS. Just UPS.

i used to work for fed ex ground and i can tell you we were pushed to meet a certain dealine every night for certain packages and sometimes had to carry packages about 20 feet to a moving belt so we used to toss some packages because it was faster i think all carriers are risky but as long as its packed nice and tight it should be fine.

My cousin, and 3-4 friends all work at the ups center here.
when boxes come in they are moved to these bins to await loading on the proper frieght truck.
The bins have to be closed, and they are a metal frame. If the boxes dont fit they have to get another bin. they don't want to take up the entire space for a big bin in order to get the last 3 to 4 boxes.
My cousin told me that what they will do Is put the other boxes on top, and then get up on top of the bin and jump on the lid until it snaps shut, thus crushing down the boxes inside.
I always double box or trimple box anything I ship anyway or put it in a box twice its size or 3 times its size and fill it 110 percent full of packaging materials and crush the materials down and tape the box, this way is doesnt settle in shipping causing your item to become loose and fly around inside the box.
then ill tape it all over, lots of time covering the entire exterior of the box in tape, and never insure anything elss than $500 even if its $30 bucks. anything over a few hundred dollars I always insure for $1000 or so dollars.
And UPS has always paid for my items when they were damaged.

just like ceed. that's why i use UPS.. send some $30 object out and insure it for $1-2k and hope they destroy it. then proceed to make them pay in full.
they can try to give you the whole "you didn't pack it right" bs, but say you got your attourny on the other line, or mail boxes etc. start pullin big claims and they'll change their mind. most companies would rather settle with just payin out the insurance on somethin than goin to court over it.

The local Fedex ground delivery people (Northern NJ) are lazy and incompetent I have had nothing but bad experience with them (from the standpoint of an individual receiving deliveries), and I no longer deal with any company/individual that requires I accept delivery through them.
I had constant problems with delivery drivers claiming "no one home" when in fact they didn't stop by at all. I've heard its a common practice, especially if you have a particularly bulky package, and the driver is behind schedule. Whatever the reason, I no longer care...I just know that I will never give them the opportunity to put me through that kind of hassle again

Well, we dont even have fork lifts in our hub, so that wouldn't be a problem.
Also, I'm not in any way defending UPS. After working there, I'd be scared to ship important stuff through them. Like was said above ALOT of times if its not computers or big stuff, the belt won't reach and we just toss the packages onto the belt, which is 5-10 ft. away. I'm really good at getting the package to land gently on the belt but some people just throw it, sometimes it makes the belt, sometimes it doensn't.
Sometimes loaders do a ****ty job, and make crappy walls. Then us unloaders will pull one box and have a whole wall of boxes fall down. Nothing we can do to prevent it, we've got to get out of the way becaue sometimes you've got those 50 lbs. packages full of nails that could fall on your head, not a good thing.
To sum it up, at the UPS hub I work at, they care about package handling, but more about volume. They want you to get out as much as you can as fast as you can. Package handling is a secondary concern. They will yell but they dont do sh!t to you if you are throwing stuff, I've seen it happen so many times. BTW: I've had nothign but bad experiences with FedEx and USPS. USPS takes forever. FedEx is a little better, but they are still a little slow and all the drivers are rude (I know its not really a FedEx problem but ya know...) Everything I've ever gotten from UPS has been cool: tires, skateboards, the computer I'm typing on, 3 different subs, 3 different amps, and 2 head units. Never had aything damaged. But, if you've got the money to insure, definantly do that, and pack all your stuff extra careful. Make it to where you could throw it across the room into a wall and not have the stuff inside damaged. If thats OK, it'll survive anythign UPS or any other place can throw at it. I'm a customer too, so I'm with ya'll guys too. Just want you to know what really goes on, knowledge is power.
