Anybody have any cool ideas for sub grills (for 15 inch DVC) strong enough to sit on? Nearly all subs today are without grills, so I haven't gotten too many ideas yet.

Just wondering..why do you want to be able to sit on your grills?

I agree with the queen. Why in the world would you want to sit on the grills? If you screw them in tight enough, they won't go anywhere. If you are going to sit on anything, it is either the trunk, to keep it from popping open, or the windshield to keep it from blowing out.

I have an extended cab pickup and want to retain the back seat for use (Actually my wife wants to, I personally don't care)
I have plenty of room for the enclosure and an amp rack, but need to fire the sub upward, therefore needing a grill that can be sat upon for daily use. This is the current plan unless someone has a better idea. Got Any ideas?

Is this something you want to show off or something that will be hidden? You could make something out of square steel tubing. Maybe a 15" square with two pieces of steel running from corner to corner. Or 3/4" billet aluminum with something milled out if you want to go nuts.

OK, here's the deal. Look at the crutch web site, and see if they have a Q-logic box that will fit behind the seat. That should work. Or mount your amp under the seat.
As for grills, if the sub is under the seat, it shouldn't be that big of a problem.
Run with the wolfpac, go with rockford.

Well, instead of going through the process od finding a grill that is strong enough to sit on. Why don't you build the box so the sub is firing in to the floor. Basically making a slot loaded box using the floor. then your sub will be hidden and you won't need to have a grill strong enough to sit on because you will be sitting on the back of the box not the front or sub itself.

I was doing the same project, damn you We had the subs firing down to the floor with a clear or smoke, whichever we get in, plexi cover for the "top" of the box (where you would sit.) We just used ply & MDF wood with steel corners and "L" brackets and 1x4 and 2x4 braces. We put 2 12s in his Toyota Tocoma xtra-cab, right now the "tops" are carpeted. What we're thinking of doing is putting the plexi in and then having a seat cushion made to slap ontop of the plexi (use the plexi for shows or displays.) We made a vertical amp rack flush with the rear wall of the xtra-cab (oh yah, jump seats, not a bench to begin with) that ran up as high as the amp was tall plus and inch or so. It makes for a great arm rest We put 2 fans on top to pull nasty bad air out and two on the bottom to bring in fresh good air.
hope this helps. Also, JL audio makes their stealth subs for trucks, may offer your model. Could also look into sub box that slides under your bench, like the ones Crutchfield sells (rf-m mentioned) or you could build one too.
As for sitting on grills, I would make them out of plywood or thick plexi-glass and take a router to them . Make some kind of design to let the bass come pounding through, but doesn't sacrifice the structural integrity of the "grill".
Much luck,

OK, I enjoy this crap way too much to just slap in a Q-forms box. That's the easy way out. Besides they don't make one for 15" subs!
Anyway, I can't fire the subs down for lack of airspace (2.7 ft^3 ported, glassing the floor mounting box on top of glass Need the rest of the space for amps). But I like the idea of the steel tubing or aluminum jc2. I plan on putting a seat cushion over top when done (moderate crime area). what exactly did you have in mind?

mastap, For a steel grill you could do a 15" square with diagonals for support all welded together. You could put a logo inside the square. As far as the aluminum grill it would probably be pretty expensive for a 15" X 15" 1/2" to 3/4" thick aluminum sheet. If you are looking to have someone do this for you I currently work at a machine shop and our CNC programmer and I both enjoy this type of stuff. You can email me with any questions.
I tried to get married and finish a programming project for a client at the same time. Kinda the same. Same crappy results. But hey, we're married at least!

you want a wacky and crazy idea for woofer grills???
Take a toilet seat... (see where I am going with this one?)... and custom fabricate something so it blends into the enclosure. It was something we all didn't even pay attention to, yet we all are accustomed to the object in everyday life.
That way, at most, they'll have a ring around their butt if they sit on there too long

It ain't gonna get any better than THAT,Mastap! (I'd suggest foam on the the lid though, and some of that shaggy pink bathroom carpet. Hell, you might even want to put up shower curtains so the speaker is stealth...

I did a Ram extended once, we actually moved the back seat up about 2.5" and had 4 10" oz subs under it, firing forward. We also made the back of the seat fold down, and did the amps and processors on the back wall of the cab, under plexi and vinyl clad panels. Guy never took it to a show. I had about 2 months in that damn truck... If I had to claim a masterpiece, it was that one. 8"s oz in the doors, a/d/s/ components in the kicks, Nak mobile cd-tuner1 (they're first cdplayer, still works after 9 years) ss class a 10.0, class a 5.0, the 4 oz 10"s under the back seat. Wish I had pics of that thing.... was beautiful. I almost cry when I think of what the guy who owned it did to it. A week after it was DONE, he rolled it. What a douchebag.... oh well, he paid me what was owed...
