Hey, I was wondering if someone can help me. Ok, I am in the process of upgrading my electrical system and one of the upgrades is going to be a new HO alternator. I am wanting to do a dual alternator setup but the problem is I don’t have much room so even doing a single HO alternator is going to be pushing it. I have come up with a solution but I don’t know if will be legal in the lanes. I was searching around and I want to get a 4500 RPM 12 volt motor to turn the alternators. I want to place the alternators and motor in the spare tire well of my trunk and have it charge my battery well. I am going to have a kill switch to turn the motor on and off. Now, after reading the rule books for DB drag and IASCA neither one state that alternators can only be located in the engine bay. I do know that this will be considered as a charger and they are not allowed to be connected while in the lanes. So can I do this setup and get away with no problems or what? Second has anyone else done this before? I can not recall seeing this before. Thanks

Hahahahahaha. If you make this work and actually CREATE power with it, you win a Nobel Prize.

what speed do alternators really turn at though?

Its not the same as engine rpm right?

I say just put 1 GOOD alt up front and use a charger the rest of the time.

It would be cool to see it work if you could get it to, but IMO the end doesn't justify the means.

A good deep charge is better for the batteries anyway and I don't think you'd gain much if any having a 2nd alt in the trunk lol

Astroman and I said it best. By laws of physics, no system can be more than 100% efficient. Which means, you can't use 50W to make 200W. just not possible. It takes power to make power, everyone knows that. There is a law of physics that states Energy cannot be created or destroyed, only degraded to a lesser form of energy. Unless humans can develop a way to create more zero-point energy than the universe contains. That is 100% impossible to do, and would still not fix the efficiency issues at the root of this. You would still be adding more energy than is being reproduced. So, mute point. The end. It cannot and will not ever be possible through any means known or unknown to create more energy output than the initial input.

You could use a PTO on the transmission then run hydraulic lines to the rear then use a hydraulic motor to turn the alts but you will need a big pulley to get the alts to turn fast enough I think alts need and actually 4500rpm at the alt. i don't know the exact specs just something I thought might work

Astroman said it the best that will not work with an electric motor running an alt, but just to shine some light on the subject, first it depends on the class you are in, but all alternators must be within the skin of the vehicle. I have not read the 2008 rules but it use to be in the rules that all the alts must be driven off of the vehicles engine or it is considered a charger and is not aloud, (ie. Running alts off of a Brigs and Stratton lawn mower engine is not aloud.) so with that said, there are many ways to hook an alt to an engine, just get creative. And to answer your question on the RPM’s of an alt, most alts put out max output at around 8000rpm (but check your alt manufacture for max rpm)
