Ok my system was stolen like 2 years ago and while my insurance covered most they didnt cover the subs. Anyway I'm a bit of an obsessive impulsive hobbiest. Meaning that I find something that is challenging and I research it until i can complete it then move on. I'm not going to be in competition, since I'm in college and don't have the $$$ or time. But this summer i decided to do some research and see how cheaply i could replace my stolen system by buying used broken equipment and fixing it.

So far I have $180 of best buy gift cards... Used to purchase wiring and of course music, since EVERYTHING there is over priced.

As it stands I have 2 runs of 4 GA power wire to the trunk, and an additional run of 0GA waiting for an amp. Alt, and Ground are replaced with 0ga wire.

I am running 5x 10" Alpine type R's
#1 is in a sealed enclosure tuned to 56hz and is powered by a MRP-M350 This is my always on system sub for SQ and everyday listening.
#2-3 are in a temporary Bandpass tuned to 40Hz and are running from a temp modified MTX amp at 250watts RMS total.
#3-4 are waiting for me to finish my enclosure and are not yet powered.

Up front I have some Alpine 5 1/4" Type R components in the doors powered by a MRV-F540

For the rear I have Alpine Type S 6x9" also powered by the MRV-F540.

And just for kicks I have a pair of aura pro bass shakers and a 30WRMS x2 pre-xplode sony amp with f-mods.

What I would eventually like to get is:

1. a second set of components for the front doors, preferably 6.5" or larger for mid bass... Alternativly I would be equally satisfied with a strictly mid-bass component, but would like to stay with Alpine, such as SPX-17MB. These will either be combined with the existing components to produce a 2 ohm load for the MRV-F540, or will be given their own 100watt x 2 amp depending upon their sound Quality when paired with existing comps.

2. an additional set of 6x9" or 8" mid bass woofers for the back, these will be terminated into the exisisting MRV-F540 with the existing 6x9" to produce a 2 ohm load. Still have 70% headroom of clean power. Thinking either Alpine Type R 6x9" or else some SSMB8's or P18S4's or MA800XL's x'd over. all of which i can get used for less the $100 a pair.

3. I'm looking for a pair of mid bass 8" subs to go with the temp amp I have powering the 2 Alpine type R's in the bandpass. It is a modified MTX RT251D and is good for about 300watts at 2 ohm, so each 8" will get about 150 RMS. This isnt crucial and i can just as easily sell this amp. I'm looking to mount the 8" in custom kick's up front or if image is off in a fiberglass enclosure in lid of my trunk.

WHAT I NEED NOW IS:

1. Amps to power the other 4 subs. They are the older style (SWR-1021D) 10" type R 2ohm DVC, but have been rewound. I have 2 of them paired with the 89.4oz. magnets from the 12" version of this sub. I would like to drive them with either 1 amp for all four at 1 ohm load or 1 amp for 3 at 1.34 ohm load and swap out the 10" i have paired with the m350 for one of the 89oz subs, and power the 2 89oz with a second amp at 2 ohm. I am looking into Hifonics but am open to suggestions. I would like to have about 350-500 watts RMS goint to each sub. These will be set up so 4 are on a switch and not always on while the 1 will be on all the time to compliment the system.

2. I am in need of an increased power alternator though not looking for a 300amp one. I do not have the extra 22 horsepower needed to run a 300 watt alt but can spare 11-15HP for a 150 Amp Alt. I would prefer to use 2x smaller alts that I can get cheap rather then a more expensive HO model... I can easily machine a bracket for this, however making it fit in my engine may become a problem... I'm not finished researching this part of the install but would it be possable to run a second alt off the belt that is used to powere the AC and power steering pump. I'm willing to remove powersteering if need be to fit second Alt as this is a light car (tercel). I have already machined custom brackets to move the AC & radiater back 3.5" to make room for BMW headlights so again the bracketing is not an issue. I'm not 100% sure of the wiring for a second alt. Would it be possable to wiredirectly into the existing batery using a Voltage regulator or should I set up a second dedicated battery... I don't really have the space or desire to invest in a dedicated secondary powersupply as this car isnt for competition nor do i intend to run all the amps and subs all of the time. All told my stock ALT makes 70AMP MAX and the modified lighting system using BMW HID lights with some 55w fogs the stock electrical sys pulls a max of about 50-60amps with a much lower nom of 32.6A
70*.4=28A (OEM) +4.6A (lighting acc) + 80AH*0.5 [40A] (batt) = 72.6A draw + auido power draw = 60A max (MRV-F540) + 40A max (MRP-M350) + 30A max (modded mtx RT251D) + 25A max (sony pos amp) =155A max split on 2x 4GA power runs + sub amps Est 100-140A max draw on single run of 0GA power wire= 295A max Audio draw... However I dont plan on using bass shakers much nor will the 1200-2000watt sub amp be on all the time and as of yet the modified Mtx isnt a given so for daily usage I am looking at a realistic draw of around -70A then 50-60% max = 120-135A nom Auido draw. +sys draw =
192.6-207.6A nominal draw... an alt rated at 120%-150% of this would be 288A- 310A... This just seems overkill to me however. I am thinking of adding an additional 150A Alternator (that I have from my old car) to bring total to 220A if possable, if not I am willing to look into a 200A replacement or possably 2 150A alternaters... But 300A seems like a lot of power for 5x 10" type R's is my math off?

3. I need suggestions for the type of enclosure, I have been leaning towards a folded horn for 2 0f the subs, and a 4th order bandpass for the other two but since such a design would require 2 amps I may go with a simpler balls out all 4 ported / sealed or bandpass enclosure. I have had good expierence with bandpass thus far and prefer their sound of a simple ported box, though im not opposed to doing a ported design.

If i get around to it i am going to cut out the bottom of my trunk and drop a reenforced fiberglass box in there to hold a 15" type R that is in my closet collecting dust.

So far I have
Sub #1-5 = 10” (SWR1021D) Alpine type R 2ohm DVC
Front Speakers #1 = (SPR-136A) Alpine 5-14” components
Front Speakers #2 = ???? (SPR-17LS) possably.
Rear Speakers = (SPS-69C2) Alpine 6x9" type S 2 way
Rear Speakers #2 = ????
Mid Bass / 8" sub = ????
Bass shakers = Aura

Sub amp #1 = Alpine MRP-M350
Sub amp #2 = ????
Sub amp #3 = ????
Main System amp = (MRV-F540) Alpine
Mid / Small Sub Amp = (RT251D) modified Mtx rt.
Bass Shaker Amp = Sony (pre-xplode) 30x2 rms amp.

As i said at the begining of this post this is a summer project of mine and i have been buying used equipment and fixing it, if needed. So far I have only spent $211.67 on all of the above equipment excluding the (SPR-136A) which were given to me.

If anyone has any old or broken equipment they are looking to sell, trade I am Still looking for 4 frads of used Caps and some additional 0 ga wiring. And I welcome any of the items mentioned in my post. Drop me a line and maybe we can work something out.

I am looking for suggestions for amps to power 3-4 10" type R's

looking at the
Phoenix Gold Xenon X1200.1 for 3 of them at a 1.34ohm load. and an additional 600-800 watt amp for the other 2.

-or-

1 or 2 new Hifonics

-or-

2x Alpine MRV-1507...
but would require new voice coils to load properly

any other suggestions. I'm looking to give the subs 350-500 watts a peice and they are dual 2ohm voice coils. I dont want to spend too much but that shouldnt be a problem since I'm looking for broken amps to repair.

See if you can match up just four of the five subs you are using.

Design one great box for all four subs, or two identical boxes to avoid cancellations between two different rolloff responses.

Get one big amp that produces it's max power @ one ohm. (your four subs are dual 2ohm coils. RIGHT?) One big amp is usually less $$ than two smaller amps.

Wire it up and enjoy.

yes all 5 subs are dual 1.8-2.0 ohm voice coils.

Any advice on the mid bass speakers?
