I won't have much room for batteries in my trunk except for the sides. I would have to have 2 on each side of my trunk behind the wheel wells and they would have to be laying sideways, is that okay for the batteries?

batteries laying on their side is a no no. They will end up leaking

If you use dry cells like the Stinger or Optima you can mount them anyway ya want. Sideways,upside down, diagonal, from a string hangin in the air! But if ya get normal batts you batter not do that or you will have fun cleaning up flesh eating battery acid! HAHA. Just kiddin. Have fun and good luck!
