Get two Audiobahn AW1000X's (they are nice 10's, and two cost my friend about $135 shipped off eBay altogether, brand new) and and find a friend to build a box for/with you. Since it sounds like your first time, try a simple ported box (4th order ported). Then get a nice amp from an online store, b/c you will pay less. My preference is for the old school PPI Art Series amps, but your taste/budget will differ. Remember that wattage ratings vary a lot between manufacturers, so take that into account. My experience is that you usually you get what you pay for. Last time i was in the market for amps, good Class A/B amps were $1 or more per watt. Class D amps should be considerably cheaper, but I've never shopped for one. Don't worry about hurting your sub with a low wattage amp, you won't (although you'll be shortening the life of the amp if you play it into clipping all the time). The too-low-wattage == burnt-subwoofer is a common myth that even i was told in my first days.
Most of all, have fun with it. If you have the tools to put it together, and you are able to realize some of your own creatvity, it will be a very satisfying venture. Be safe, know the dangers of MDF and fiberglass dust , and know what Tinnitus is! Don't let any of this scare you away from working with the materials of the trade, just be safe so you can enjoy it.
