Well this year will be my first year at competing at the national level and i need alittle help. I plan i running 2 fi btl 18s, 4 hifonics XX-colossus amps, currently running 250 HO alt and 1 kinetik HC2400 in a 1998 chevy astro walled. Is this a good start? Can i expect a nice numbers out of this set up? Any help and any input will make this easier for me, thanks guys

Well I have heard some good things about the Fi btl's but I haven't seen them in action. The colossus is it able to be strapped? What kind of current draw do they have with only battery it is something you costantly have to worry about. Can't go wrong with Kinetik.

this is not built yet, i wanted to get ideas and thoughts before i went to the old garage and started building something that was not going to work. looking for any help. Seeing as that you placed 2 at wf what are you thoughts about street max lol.

Make sure the colussus can strap before you purchase them, b.c to use 4 amps they will have to be able to strap, if not look into the other Gen Hifonics amps I know they can strap.

well with the astro van you will have plenty of air space and like I said heard good things about fi but haven't seen them in action the colossus i don't believe they can be strapped but they have the cyclops is. try to watch for amps that pull alot of voltage since you can only have the battery under the hood.

you're off to a good start.. problem is going to be the vehicle.
an astro is not great for street max 1-2. i'm not saying it WONT work, but....
general rule of thumb is that caravans are better for 1-2 vehicles, and astros are better for 3-4 vehicles (and up)
i was going to use an astro as well this past season and was pushed away from it, since i was in 1-2 so i used my truck instead.
double check and see if the collosus is strappable.. i dont think it is but i might be wrong. as mentioned, you can only use 4 amps if they are strapped.
as for the btl's .... you will be MORE than happy with thier results.. but also keep in mind, there is more to it than just the subs. the enclosure, power supply, power delivery, amps, and subs all need to work in harmony.
basically, and i'm sure you know already... the greatest subs and the greatest amps will do nothing if the rest of the foundation isnt there as well.
feel free to pm me if you have any questions.

i think what i might do then would be run street max 1-2 until i can get 2 more 18's and then some more amps, i was think about running super street but i can cant even mess with team budweiser or any of the other beast that are in super street, im not saying that the guys in street max dont bring it, but i think i maybe able to hang. Would doing max 1-2 work until i could get the money together to get into max 3-4? Can you do this and still get points for world finals even if you switch class's mid year? Again thanks for any and all help.

iirc correctly, wayne said you dont need any number of points in your class.
you just need to have a certified in your class, and you need 50% of you qualifying points with your vehicle.
you can jump classes all year long if you like, as long as you get a certified with the vehcile that will go to finals.
as for jumping to 3-4... like i said, i'm not going to tell you that an astro WONT work... i am of the belief that ANY vehicle CAN be loud in any respective class, it just takes that much more work to get it there.
people told me i would be able to hang with my truck in street max also, because it wasnt an extended cab.
until this year, no one would have thought that a geo metro could even dream about 2nd place, but carnes and team baldman proved that wrong as well.
last year i took 6th with a 4 door buick regal.
so, i belive any vehicle can work.. just takes time, effort, and determination to get it there... a little knowledge tends to help as well.
what i'm getting at is that just because the general rule is against you... dont let that push you away. prove the general rule wrong !!
and good luck this year, i look forward to seeing you in the lanes !!!

Agreed jay, any vehicle can work, if you have the time to make it do so. The astro is not the greatest place to start, but you can make it work if you absolutely have to. For 3-4 the astro is one of the best vehicles out there (as proven by david baldwin, repeatedly)

Is it the cabin shape/volume that makes the Caravan better for 1-2 vs the Astro?
I enjoy learning about the crazy SPL stuff...might help me get an extra dB for my SQ testing.

An astro is a great vehicle for almost any class. They can get really loud in a 1-2 setup you just have to know what you have. You have to understand that the amount of room for an enclosure in an astro is really big. Options are unlimited as far as enclosure goes. I think you have a great starting point and I wish you luck. See you in the lanes!!!

Does anybody know of any good shops in the iowa area, i would like to hook up with a shop for this project so that i can get any help needed? I know this is kind of off topic but seeing as that you guys would more then likely know some one that knows what street max is about. All the shops here in des moines really dont have any clue as to what db drag racing is or really dont even care about what we do. I already know that im going to run into problems, i just want to be prepared when it happens thanks again guys, this kind of help is why people get into db drag and stay

The only thing I can think of that might help is Alan Laake is in Iowa. He is the current SS 1-2 NW World Champion. I dont know where he is in Iowa but he might be able to help or at least point you in the right direction.
