maybe he's reading a 1979 Novel - Psychlone is a 1979 horror novel by Greg Bear. It is set in the present day (at the time it was written) and deals with the afterlife, which makes it similar to Bear's much later Dead Lines.

Speaking of new types of contests, did anyone see the show on the animal planet last night, it was called something like nature's most extreme sounds from animals, something like that, but it was a countdown and the #1 was a shrimp, called the pistol shrimp, when it closes its claw it emits a bubble and a small amount of light, and when the bubble pops it produces sound waves equivelent to 200 db, all under water, it can kill its prey several feet away, it showed it killing another shrimp from 6 feet away, the other shrimp just got knocked over and rolled haha it was funny, jus thought someone might be interested in that,
