i know of this travesty also. i am currently driving one with the same db killing stuff in it. when i initially built the car, it brought back about +2 db bare, vs carpet. i also didn't do the math, and finished the car. i'm still climbing with the car, but will eventually change it to maybe vinyl to see the difference

i drive a honda del sol with the removable top. i also have just started db drag racing. doin' 'bout a 48.7 so far with room for improvement. don't think it'll make the top in SS1-2, but i've only been blastin' since May 03. i at least want to be competitive there this year. maybe i can get a little better next year. i call it "LIVIN' & LEARNIN'". most folka are, or seem to be fairly impressed with it, but i'm not satisfied yet.i carpeted the whole rear in a surround setup and lost 2-2.5 db in just doing that, but at the time the car was just to piss off my local business competitor. now it is to see how loud i can make it like it is. that is why i say maybe next year.

That is PRECISELY how I got started in dB Drag. I'd LOVE to see ole Eric's face from Audiojerks of Gainesville if he were to sit in Yota now. Actually thinking back, I Eric was one of the few there I could even tolerate.
I normally give business to local shops, but that's one shop I wouldn't wish on my worst enemy. For 25,000 bucks, they promised a customer a 167+ legal dB. 18 12s in a cut through and 6kw later they barely scratched out a 150.7 on the OLD AUDIO CONTROL!!

There is no way that carpeting a box with the unbacked trunkliner has any effect on frequencies below say, 8k hertz. To be an effective barrier against bass, you would have to have carpet or a foam pad say, 6-8" thick. So, if you want to kill off any problems with your tweeters, then, yeah, get some trunk liner.

Well I dunno, I just know what happened, all I did was carpet my box and lost 1.1 dB

Inside of a trunk perhaps, however carpet has been proven on the meter to loose in cars like a CRX or SUV. Hell, different seat covers have influenced scores favorably and disfavorably.

I think it has to do with the "CRX" style box, and the way that it relies on the backwave from the roof
