i was watching msnbc this morning and seen a story about the smart car from europe. they said it will be shipping to canada very soon.
my question is, if it passes canada's emmissions inspections, will it pass ours?
and if a competitor uses one of these vehicles, will they only be allowed to compete in canada if it still does not meet our emissions requirement?

I am pretty sure that Canadian emmisions standards are just as tough as the US ones...I see alot of really crappy, old and huge, V8 cars in the US so the emmissions can't be that strict [Smile]

I belive the emission restrictions are even tighter in canada

I would think california has some pretty strict ones though

There are several "steps" of emission standards here in Germany and Europe, too.

The better the emissions level of your car, the less you pay taxes - and the SMART is performing the hardest emision level (and as far as I heard, this level is harder than any american standart).

So I'm sure if you'll get one, it will meet the emision standards, but I'm not sure if the deparments will know this [Wink]

And - for Americans nearly not interesting - it take very low gas [Wink] (especiially the DIESEL, but I don't know if DIESEL is as cheap as the gas).

(The diesel takes 3,4 Liters per 100 km - that's about 70 Miles per Gallon)
