Do they come out with a new mic every year? why are the new mics tougher than older ones? Are they more accurate? Is it to keep the challenge in the sport? Keep world records from being shattered? Couldn't they just recalibrate the old ones?

im not trying to start ish at all, im seriously curious...stoopid question i know. but im sure there are others who wanna know too [Smile]

thanks guys!

Dude where have you been?
Wayne invented a whole new setup. It uses sensors, instead of mics. It is extremely consistent, all over the world. It does not need calibration.
For SPL competition, it's the best thing since sliced bread.

I am sure if you use the search feature on this forum, you will read more than you ever want to know about it.

I tried to use a piece of sliced bread at the last show. It got sucked up into Michael Hughes port and turned into CRUTONS!!!

Its called innovation. As SPL vehicles get louder and louder, a better measurement system is needed to verify their scores. The old shaft style microphones (regardless of the model) had a nonlinear response above the mid 160s. You can calibrate it at 164 dB all you want, but that means there is only ONE SPL where it is perfectly accurate (164). The old mics also degraded their performance with use. Mics that had been well used and repeatedly were subjected to high SPLs gradually lost their linear performance (well what linear performance they had).

The new mics are more accurate and read lower. That doesn't meant that they are "low" just that the older mics were high. Also by using a pressure sensor instead of a standard microphone diaphram, the effect of air velocity (the speed at which the air is moving in the cabin) is reduced. This combined with their sensor being on the "back" side of the unit all makes for lower scores. I don't care if I do a 129, as long as everytime I hit it with no changes, on a number of different mics, I always do a 129. That was not the case with the old mics.

I assumed that they were more accurate is what it was...but you know what they say about assuming [Wink] i have searched around and basically all i kept reading was how tough they were and on and on...i first figured it was a more accurate read out is all and i guess the reason why some people say its tougher is b/c their old scores were much lower with the new mic and weren't necessarily happy about it? *shrug*

Anyway...just felt it was much better to ask than to go on assuming. thanks guys, shedluv & david you all rock [Smile]
