Sound damping materials may be used to reduce vibration when installed in accordance with the manufacturer’s recommended installation instructions. The maximum total thickness of sound damping material applied at a given point may not exceed 5/32 inch (4mm). The sound damping application may consist of mat-type material, spray-on material, or a combination of the two. A maximum of 2 layers of mat-type material may be used in any application, even if the total thickness of the sound damping material(s) is less than 5/32 inch (4mm).
Does this mean that I can have 4mm worth of deadener on the inner and outer skin of my door?
Or does this mean I can only have 4mm TOTAL on the door?
And will they disqualify me from stock if I put 2 layers of STFU-80, which is 2.07mm thick? Will they get on my case about the .14mm when I put two layers on?
Thanks for helping.

You cannot put damping material on the outer skin of your vehicle. As for that extra .14mm Maybe you wouldn't have trouble at a single point event, but at a 2x or 3x event. you could be forced to remove it,or worse be DQ'd.
When the rules are very specific, such as this, they are enforced to the letter. At least at multi-point events.

Thank you for your reply.
I was thinking overnight that, wouldn't the .14mm go down when we deaden the car?
Or does DB Drag measure your dampening at every show?

i have thought of this too, inside the outer skin, from inside the car

I thought I knew how thick 0.14 mm was, but just to be sure I pulled out the calipers. LMAO
If you really think you can detect 0.14 mm, NO WAY.
If the judges use a book of sound deadening thickness then maybe, otherwise NO WAY!!
btw, I am not condonening cheating, but 0.14 is ridiculously insignificant, the problem is where the line is drawn

I know in several installs that the deadening of the body panel behind the speakers installed in the door panel is a common practice. You actually get more of a gain in SQ (which is why you should deaden in the first place) by deading the outside body panel to reduce the vibrations from the rear wave of the woofer. Dynamat even makes a product called "dynaORB" that specifically addresses this issue. I have done over 15 installs where dynamat was installed on the inside of the outer door skin behind the speakers located in the door. So according to Wayne this is illegal? Deadening the inner door metal behind the panel only works as a "sealer" to block the sound coming from the rear wave, not to deaden the rear wave in the first place. If you look in CARSOUND magazine from a few months ago, they even discuss this in an article on installing speakers.
