Hello, and thank you for reading this post. I am curious to know if 6x9's are considered "speakers larger than 8 inches". Primarily, if a competitor was to use a pair of 6x9 speakers (but the speakers were not played during the metering process), would the speakers be used to determine the competitor's classification? If so, should that be (specifically) written into the rules. If the speakers would not count towards the competitors classification, should that also be stated in the rule. Seeing as we are attempting to create a simpler format for new competitors to compete in, should we risk trying to explain how 6x9 are judged, if there is nothing within the rules stating such?
Thank you.
PS. Yes, this may have a direct effect on my installation. I would like to use a pair of 6x9's (ran directly from the radio..ie. non amplified), but would like to know how the speakers will effect the class I will be placed into.
PPS. I have been told by a judge (no name given), that 6x9's are considered "larger than 8 inch drivers". If that is the final determination, then I will adjust accordingly. But, at the same time, should we write that into the rule book so everyone knows the facts. This post should, in no way, be viewed as a disrespect towards that judge.

that would be LAME if you had to pull out your 'by nines because they were considered a woofer. Just like its lame for everyone to say that you get no SPL from a capacitor (which you usually dont) yet there is a 1f limit in street? If they dont help (like the 'by nines dont help) your score in any way then why trip over it?

i thought about that too.......but the judges have eyes and there is a difference between a wall of 6x9's and a pair of 3 way "by nines" in your rear deck for some fill.

I remember in a rules discussion about using smaller than 8 inch speakers that Wayne said the following:
Those speakers which are used in a subwoofer application that are smaller than 8 inches in diameter will be counted by finding the total cone are of those speakers and then dividing that cone area by the cone area of an 8 inch driver to get an equivalent number of 8 inch speakers.
This was in regards to the new smaller breed of subwoofer out there, particularly the JL 6W0 and the FOCAL 5" subwoofer.
I would assume that a 6X9 woofer used in a non-subwoofer application (for example the rear deck of most cars) would not be counted as a "subwoofer application"
Those woofers used in a wall in a subwoofer application would be divided into an equivalent number of 8 inch speakers and be counted that way.

Thank you. I recall that same information. Now, should it be written into the rules, or should it remain unwritten?
If this information is to be included in the rulebook, how should it be worded?

thats fair enough.....i mean no one is disputing a wall full of 6x9's but if i got 2 18's and 2 'by nines in the rear deck that shouldnt make me SS 3-4. Also, being in the rear deck would bump me into a WALLED class since they would be above the window line too......right? Anyways the same should be for subs in doors that are 8" or so. If its obvious that they arent a subwoofer application, like they are mid-kicks or something, then it shouldnt be treated as a sub. I wanted to use 8's in my doors but that rule wouldve for sure bumped me up to 3-4. I think that should be left to the discrepency (sp) of the judge. If he can clearly see whats going on then it should slide.
Maybe the SPL one note guys may not understand or agree with this but i listen to music with my car and i compete so the 8" in the door would definitly not be contributing to SPL.
