Each year, the dBDRA reviews the effectiveness of the previous year's rules in an effort to determine if "loopholes" or "gray areas" exist. In 2002, we noticed problems with the following areas...

  • Extreme competitors using plexiglass build-downs to circumvent the "unobstructed view" rule.
  • Competitors using very thick mat type material. (Currently, the rules permit up to 2 layers of mat-type material without specifying thickness.)
  • Team name abuses. Using multiple vehicles under the same team name, etc.
These are a few examples. Please post your thoughts on these and other problems you may have experienced in 2002.

Wayne - would you elaborate on the "team name abusing" ?

can we not have say a extreme 1-2 car and a super street 1-2 car on the same team competeing at finals next year? (if all goes well and we make it)

Extream compeditors using plexiglass build downs:
I belive that the initial intent of that rule was to limit the amount that you could build down from the ceiling, and displace airspace. the wording of "unobstructed view" was nothing more than a chanel for trying to explain that nothing can be blocking the front winsheild. There should in my opinion be a ruling made that PROHIBITS plexi build downs even though they do not obstruct view. Reason being...the original intent of the rule was any build down of this sort is illegal, the "unobstructed view" clause was just a way of explaining that.

Thick mat issue:

A ruling must be made here. I think that it is pretty obvious that if you are going to put a limitation on the spray deadener, then you should do the same on the mat. after all they perform the same function equally well. IMO the same restriction that is on the spray deadener should be enforce for the mat also. In other word you choose either....

1/8" of spray deadener
or:
1/8" total for all layers of mat (unlimited layers)

team name abuses:

cannot make informed decision at this time.

if wayne is talking about what terry told me then there is one way to eliminate the "team name" problems

1) give each competitor a number for the vehicle that they plan to go to finals with, ((say extreme 1-2 vehicle number 1 (team ____) or whatever..then extreme 1-2 vehicle number 2 (team ___))

2) the vehicle is registered with the dBdrag (by a title..proof of ownership..whatever) and they have to compete with that vehicle and only that vehicle all season (unless something happens to it..like what happened to Ben Sams last weekend) and if there is a vehicle change they have to notify the dBdrag that they have changed the vehicle

just a couple ideas...can anybody else comment on solving this problem? [Confused]

I feel that there should be a number that ties a DBDRA membership to the vehicle. Right now there is absolutely no way to say the the vehicles that competed in the World Finals is the same vehicle that got 50 points and certified scores. The last four digits in the vehicles VIN would be a great way to track these things. Add a line that ties the competitor name to this VIN. In some extreme vehicles without VINs, assign a number to be affixed to that car. I dont feel that this was a problem this year, but is an area that could be pushed to the limit and no one could prove it wither way.

a few things.

street class should have a power and pricing cap. example. s1-2 1 amp limited to 2000 watts and $1000 MSRP. s3-4 4000 watts and $2000 MSRP.

also got to stop all this i won last year so i will sell it to my best friend for $1 to go next season. or put it in my girlfriends name to run it. you cant run the same vehicle with the same equipment in it if you placed in the top 15 in street class. but then again if the move up rule is stopped then this wouldnt apply.

no matter what this cant continue using $6000 amps and stuff. it is suppost to be street class. people are not putting this in thier normal street cars. i even seen a car i think a crx with 2 zapco 4k watt amps sitting right behind the driver seat. that shouldnt be allowed. if it is street it should look it and be it.

I think one thing that needs to be addressed, and be addressed quickly, is the buildup of extreme interiors. I do agree that the plexi build downs should not be allowed, but I also believe the rulebook should be more concise as to what traditional seating arrangements are, and go so far as to add diagrams showing what db drag considers 'legal' style seating.

The increase in vehicles that allows for 'sitting' on ones ankles as a traditional seating position needs to be addressed. It has always been my interpretation that traditional meant sitting with feet in front of you, and your heals not being over the plane of your butt.

I agree with Nate on this one.

I say an extreme vehicle should have a seat or two in it at all times, just like any other class.

Why should it be different then others, just because it is etxreme and the cab is basically a sound chamber, well the chamber can still be made to do the high numbers they are now with seats.

As for street classes, well the cone area rule is nice, but then you'll still have the arguement of the 4kw amp and so on in that class.

Well I say this then, like one other post, limit the amp to one power source input, say like the viper has 2 and the 4kw has 2, then you can't use these in street class.

I see the drag queen has been banned from dbdrags period, what is wrong with banning an amp from a class, I see nothing wrong with it.

As for combineing classes to gain a class, well that is a tough one, but from what I heard in the chat during finals was alot on the street, more so then the extreme. So I would have to go with adding a new street class.

Oh forgot one. As far as vans go, I say like the other posts, let us with vans push the box forward to the jambs like the crx's, I see nuthing we have to gain by this but maybe a db, if that.

well..i dont really agree with the seat thing..if that's the case it's going to be hard removing ALOT of concrete from my car just to get access to some seat bolts, not only my extreme car but pretty much all of them out there besides Chili and Big Jim [Eek!]

i do however agree with nathan, there should be some sort of a diagram in the rule book as to how the vehicle needs to be built for the judges to beable to fit in it. and if they need to fit in the vehicle with the cover up panels in place or not....
not pointing any fingers - but i have some serious doubts that a person my size would have fit in some of the vehicles i saw at finals and my knees be 12" away from my chin with those panels in place [Smile]

I wasn't saying to keep seats in the vehicles, just ot maintain some kind of resemblance to the car it once was.

Make it clear what a traditional seating position is for extreme vehicles. Put a picture of a stick figure with his feet in front of his knees with alteast 12" between his knees and chin in there if need be. ONce again I say keep the move up rule for those that qualified for eliminations at finals. Get rid of the selling your car for a dollar to a family or team member to stay in street. Finally no drop down battery boxes in Super Street. They are still suppose to be street vehicles or resemble them and people dont do this on street cars.

1.In the current rule book, the following statement pertains to the windshield;
quote:
Only areas of the windshield that are not impeded in any way will be considered unobstructed.
Maybe the same comment can be utilized for all barriers of the interior.
2.The maximum allowance for all types of material could be more specific (ie. maximum 1/8" thickness, regardless of type).

3.Competitors are "tracked" through dBDRA (for potential finals invites and record beaking scores), so why not have their vehicles "registered" through the dBDRA. When a person (or team) obtains a membership, have an "assigned number" given to the vehicle (similar to a federal VIN). This assigned number must be permanantly affixed to the vehicle (non-removable sticker, riveted number plate, etc.)in a pre-determined location (ie. door striker panel). This could solve one potential problem, while at the same time, create a new one. The minor problem of tracking points for non members (ie.people who do not register with dBDRA until late in the season)could be solved by modifying the tracking software so that it only tracks vehicles that have been assigned a dBDRA registered number. This could help eliminate vehicle changes during the season, and also encourage people to become members early in the season.

This applies to finals.I think that all rules should be for everybody to follow not just certain people.Im not going to mention any names but there was a couple of people who were aloud to drive there vehicles into the lanes when all others had to push there vehicles into the lanes.Another point is that move in was friday only and when i came into the covention center i heard that there was a couple of vehicles let in saturday morning. Finally something needs to be done with the amount of tint on the vehicles windows, the rules stated they must be open and on display during show hours.I bet half the cars there you could not even see in the windows. This comes up after every finals but nothing is done about it.

A "test dummy" could be used to determine legal sitting positions in extreme vehicle. While it may not be cost effective for dBDRA to purchase one of the test dummys, First Technologies offers a rental program which would allow dBDRA to use this type of procedure at all multipoint events.

Now thats what I consider a traditional seating position. I think a picture with that body outline should be included in the rulebook.

On top of including a standard seating position, you may want to include some measurements, as having just the picture would still allow people to assume standard seating for someone who is 3'4" tall [Smile]

Measurements for distance from the steering column for example would probably be prudent.

RandyD71 super street classes are an inbetween class of street and extreme classes. wayne has already stated in front of door jambs is street style. everything after is extreme. so building battery trays below is allowed. although it might not be safe that is for the presiding judges to decide. this issue was brought up a few months ago cause someone in SS had a battery tray with the batteries not even secure.

Sid - i'm glad you liked the vehicle numbering idea [Big Grin] lol...i think it's great that a "little guy" like me could have an influnce on a big orgaization such as dBdrag! that's why want to get in on the action!

Anyways - we should have a standardized location like the Federal Transportation people did with the VIN numbers in a standard position - i think that it would be easiest to have an I.D. tag on the passenger side of the vehicle(like on the outside or something near the mic position). At that location it could easily be seen by the certified judge to write down the number and the certified score. It would also keep the points system in line

just a thought....i like the ideas on the test dummy!
