As the voltage increases the amperage required decreases. This should produce less heat and be less apt to have problems. I beleive you are comparing 12v and 18v competition amps that are pushed to the limits not daily driven cars. This also requires less cable due to the added voltage = less amperage draw.

As for warrenty issues, some manufacturers even have the 18v power ratings on their website. I find it hard to beleive that doing something they advertise their amps will do voiding the warrenty.

Offtopic ,

but 1 : 18 V indeed decreases the amperes needed , but alot of components inside the amplifier dont like 18 Volt without even push those to the limits regards Amperes , just the voltage itself is not liked . 16 V instead is something that is mostly possible , but then again those will be charged at 17 V + ...

2 : warranty : yes manufacturers do advertise with 16 and 18 V ratings , but at the same time you can read in the manual and warranty that connect these sweeties to 16 or 18 V is not warrantied and only for competition use and under own risk and responsability .

Just to keep facts clear for 98-99 % from the products on the market in car audio [Wink]

Ontopic : regards psychlone no real comments to make

I will bet my car with the equipment in it that you are no where near 136 dB full range averaged over 30 sec 10 feet outside the car...and won't get close to it as the rules are written.

I am interested in giving this a shot. DBSteve - will you be promoting this at the Topeka events this coming season? I would be willing to give it a try and see what happens with it.

Will this be a category for World Finals? If so, how will qualification for it be worked out (ie - points accrued)?

Additional info to consider...

The measurements are made with a microphone instead of the sensor. (The sensor will not read anything above 250 Hz.) The SPL cap for the mic is 136 dB.

Putting mic stands in a car is a pain. I don't want to go back to doing that again.

Many vehicle owners don't want people (judges included) climbing around inside their vehicles.

RTA measurements must be part of the judging criteria to insure broadband reproduction.

Samples are taken approximately 42 frames per second (compared to once per second in dB Drag and twice per second in Bass Race).

At car shows, the judge can move his "cart" from car to car to take measurements.

I want a format where the music sounds like a rock concert outside the vehicle. Many demo cars and a great many normal car stereo systems are designed this way already. Systems such as this create great excitement. Trust me on this.

We could consider using a boom-style mic stand to stick the microphone through the window but I am concerned that the SPL could exceed 136 dB.

This format will not be suitable for all locations. Car shows and similar venues are ideally suited for Psychlone.

The format is not intended to pull dB Drag or Bass Race contestants. No one wants to compete against those guys.

Nothing we do will be as dangerous as the most basic night club and nothing we do will have any impact on the perception of "boom cars".

Thanks in advance.

i'm loving this, this is EXACTLY what my truck is built for now ahh i'm so happy [Big Grin]

is there an SPL difference under 136 db using the RTA mic vs the termlab sensor? if not I don't see anyone hitting a 136 10 ft away from the vehicle i'm loving it Wayne 2 thumbs way up!

People are complaining about this at events, its no different then when the old demo cars used to play their music the entire time, I think it brings an aspect to DBDrag that everyone forgot about...ACTUALLY PLAYING LOUD MUSIC AND SOUNDING GOOD WHILE DOING IT

this is esentially a branch off of Bass Race, everyone is saying that ground pounders are coming back, now you have to build a REAL ground pounder to be competitive I love it

This is DEFINATELY for me & the 83!!! [Big Grin] I have been representing this since 1989. [Wink]

I would suggest having a security judging segment for extra points. The way I look at it is this: Any proper customized competition sound vehicle should have a security system to protect it.

If you want to talk about 'old school ways', this was the thing. Remember when CA&E had MUCH to say about security back when they first started in 1989. Somewhere in the mid-late 90's, they stopped mentioning the security factor altogether. Now I look through the mag and I can't even find security mentioned anywhere. [Frown]

Basically what I am saying is: Let's also bring the security judging back into the Comp scene. I know IASCA did it & am not sure if they still do?

* BTW, I am planning on attending a show in Feb & would GLADLY put my car up to the challenge of this new format of competition!!! *

As a newb to dB drag, this sounds perfect for me.
The only thing would be the 10' measurement rule.
I'd say headrest, or a mic only 2-3 ft from the car.

Wayne,

If you really want to do RTA, why not put the mic 1 foot out 1 foot behind the doorjam. At finals you could even use 2 mics, one on each
side.

The only other place that makes sense to me is dead center of the listening compartment, but then you would surely go over 136db on the low frequencies

And.,,....gasp......how about subjective judging,,,,,actual SQ judges that stand outside the car

Sound like a great idea ..
Finally i (and alot of others )will not have the problem to decide to which kind of competitions we will have to take part(Emma- db drag).
I am a judge for Emma spl installation lots of my clients have sq installs(mid woofer -mid range -tweeter setups) in their cars but could never compete in db drag events. Now with Psychlone it give them the chance to compete thus having more cars coming to shows and more people looking at cool installs.
We europeans know that Emma competition has taken up a big space from db drag (look at sinsheim) so its a graet idea.
About Installation part I dont agree totaly with Tor about head unit the same color with dashboard ect. because it become more hard for simple competitors to compete.(i had to change over 15 bulbs in the cars dash to match the head unit for emma) so i suggest just basic rules, very simple and quick to jugde.
