I disagree, I have personally never seen anybody with a single 18" setup. Sorry.
I have seen a few. Like Tigerwoodsjr for example. I work with a gut with one Audiobahn 18 in his Blazer and my cuzin has and 18" stroker in the trunk of an LTD. The single 18s are out there, just not a popular as the single 15 is...

You can't make a class to please everyone. If I have 4 10's in my car, does that mean we should have a class for those with 4 10's. You're never going to please everyone PERIOD

darn, there goes my dreams of having a REDNECK class. Maybe one day, people will realize that my speaker, duct taped into a cardboard box, IS competitive enough to have it's own class.
Scott I was just wondering what forumla you are using to determine the area of these woofers. I was thinking pi*radius squared was the formula for area. Just curious

pi(r squared) I think

Non-points events, just for fun, local consumers only. I think this “Entry Level Class” should be flexible, so it can be tailored to the needs and wants of the retailer or promoter holding the event. Then the points classes are “by the book.”

Typically, since the frame of a woofer doesn't add much to the overall sound pressure level in deciBells, I don't believe it is often counted into the 'cone area' measurement
And since the cone of a woofer is considerably smaller in diameter than the frame, it is conceivable that a cone area measurement will be smaller than a measurement of the area of the entire woofer
That M.E.C.A. chart uses total area, including frame, not cone area only, so it's actually mis-named.

Following that logical path, the area used to determine cone size should not include the diameter of the dustcap or the surround material either?

The way I figure, if there ends up being classes that deal with cone area, they area needs to be able to figured quickly. Also if this is going to be a begineers class, we best just make 'r' of a 10" woofer = 5 for safety's sake. I understand what you are sayig, however, Scott.

Sid, most manufacturers seem to include 1/2 of the surround in their Mms measurement in grams, and Sd. As for the dust cap, except for Stroker type woofers (Ear'ake Balls,Shocker,etc...) this would definitely be a part of area of the moving cone(Sd) and Mms.
I agree if there was to be a 'cone area' class it should be kept simple - even simpler would be:
3-10", 2-12", 1-15"
