Top plate shape, how tight the gap is, copper/aluminum sleeves on the t-yoke, copper/aluminum shorting rings, grade of steel used in the motor, how good the ceramic is for the magnets, etc.

So its more the make up than the size.... What % of the total quality of the motor is size?

Hard to say, too many variables just to label as physical size especially with ceramic motors. You could have a huge motor but have very little flux in the gap, and conversely you could have a smaller motor with more flux in the gap. Size is good for marketing and the oh **** reaction.

depends what ur looking to build. daily or burp sub. with a daily sub you look for alot of cooling such as cross drilled pole, groved pole, knotched top plate. all those are great for daily but lower the BL of the motor.
for spl a thick top plate with a extended pole works great. you also want a tighter gap.
when looking for the gap a 8 layer coil will handle the power better but have a higher impedence rise than 4 layer coil.
there is positives and negitives with everything...

this is a good topic. Id like to hear Mr. Demuths opinion on this stuff. Ive always wondered what in particular gave a motor an advantage over another.
Another good topic would be coil and suspension...which properties of a coil and suspension give one sub the advantage over another.

I would love to give my opinions.... But it will turn into an arguement..... And it would disclose what gives an advantage. I agree with some things mentioned here....

I know that for some thing this is better or that....like corey said. The thing that got me thinking is that the alpine type x motor is close to same as the old hc motor is, but can take lots more power with all things in common...and by spring i hope to start selling my own brand in store. no one can get em but me, i control price, and QC too. some co have done well for years, and now cut corners to make a buck! I have to take some things into thought now as I am moving that way. Like at what point will big not matter, and at what point will it be not worth the $ corey and I have sent most his working day many time talking about this type of stuff... truth is my 6k 15 will not be a every day sale, and something in the 1500 watt class is much more real world. I want more that spl guys buyn them to so a sql sub is kinda what will be more than of what i will spend time messing with

yea agreed the type X motor and HC motor have a few very important differences. You'll ever get anywhere near the same results out of the type X as the HC.
Care to post any pics of your HC motors by chance?
DO they look the same as mine? Im pretty sure mine were early HC motors.

it looks the same except his has a 2nd thin bottom plate to cover up the onyx. all hc's are old motors. hc can be made into a nice spl woofer with a pole plug and stiffer suspention. the stock hc's only came with 1 stiff spider...

mine both originally came with dual soft spiders that were spaced out in between each other.
then after i blew those up I removed the spacer and reconed with single stiff spider and ran them for a season at 0.7 ohm off of an orion 2500d each. Then blew them up in a deathmatch
Now have reconed again with dual soft spiders but havet played them as of yet.
Theyre the first good woofers I ever bought and bought them with my first ever pay cheque so Ill keep them forever and hopefully just add more to the collection.
