Update: Factory non-bose system with 2 DD 1508 subwoofers, powered by 2 JBL GTO 601.1ii amps (brand new) were sitting in my closet for years. Box is tuned to 36Hz and these subs are way more then I could ever have imagined, they are loud. For everyday driving, amp gains are set at zero and input sensitivity is at minimum.
Since the subwoofers are running at close to 850W RMS, about how much power should I have when I upgrade the front speakers?
If I decide to compete in SQ, does the system have to be loud or is 100W up front good?
Thanks, Sam

i'd have probably 200W+ available to just the woofer. Then run active filtering and a second amp(same model) to have another 100W+ available to the tweeter. I am talking RMS numbers here
