I've don't have much, just a small setup, but my brother in law's yamaha setup is the best sounding setup I've heard by far.. I've gone to the stores and listened to B&W and such.. and for the price, his yamaha's (in 7.1) whoop the **** out of the expensive stuff..

surround sound only sounds good for movies. I much prefer stereo+sub or stereo+center+sub(depending on the processor) at most for music.

I cannont get enough of my center channel though, you hear things in movies that just amaze you.

a lill update. have bought a phillips 42 full hd lcd tv, a zachry 600wrms pa amplifier and 2 x cerwin vega v-max subwoofers. a pic of the system as it is now
