80's biggest sub brands - Petras, M&M, Kicker (the one's that the dust-cap always fell off), Rockford Fosgate, . Out of all the brands, the best in the Texas area were the Petras. Plus they were right outside of Dallas.
80-85 most popular amp brands - Rockford Fosgate , Coustic , Linear Power , Autotek (1st gen looks like an Alphasonic) Pioneer , Sanyo (these were BIG in 81-82) , Zapco 150 and 151 Two and Three piece amps , Audiomobile (advent) , Soundstream came out sometime in the mid-80's, my brain is starting to hurt from thinking that far back. I was just getting started in audio then. Best of the 80-85 bunch are the RF Power 360,VI,II,40,45,220,2100,250, ect. Zapco 151, Sanyo 6200, 6050 with remote fader. Linear Power (all) , Audiomobile/Advent (all),
86-89 - The list is too long. Everyone jumped in the game during that time. The best of the bunch from then would be the RF Punch 45, Zapco 151a, and the Orion 225. 225 hcca and Punch 45 were the most popular anyway. But I bet this debate could go on for a long time. There were a lot of start up companies that built some really nice amps in the late 80's. Only one that I can think of that still builds them in the USA from the 80's is Harrison Labs.

I loved me some Petras. I had a PR154 and some PR108s. Buddy of mine did 8 PR124s in a wall in a CRX back in 95. Another buddy had the big magnet PZ124s on a Lanzar Optidrive 200.

For SQ it helped...for SPL it did nothing. At one time I tried 200 1 farad caps and because they discharge so quickly it did not keep the battery volatage up any longer for a 3 second run. What did help is changing to a 2 voltX8 system with more current capacity...around 10,000amps if I remember correctly.

I did run (4) 1 farad caps on my head unit and processing during SPL runs to keep the voltage above 12 volts. Without them, the majority of the power would go to the amplifiers and shut down my source. This just gave me a buffer for a couple of seconds.

Thats the first RF amp I owned but I sold it in 1986 to get a Power 650. It came packaged with a Pre-Z eq. with the dancing leds and sliders tilted at a 45 degree angle...bad ass for its time.

The RF Vintage Old School WR Legend... Welcome Mark
I am still representing that good ol' era and am proud of it! Matter of Fact, I still have the old CA&E ad from RF Team America up on my trophy wall with you, your wife & the yellow Blazer. It is entitled: "Winning isn't everything...It's the only thing!"

I have everything Fosgate and RF made in eq's and amps from 73-93. (end of HD era). I collect the old RF stuff. But the Power II that I have is missing the back plate. Seems to be one of the hardest to find of the RF items out there. Got the Power VI, 360, ect. Just missing a completed Power II. If you come across one with one of your RF buddies, let me know. Here is a pic of the Power II next to a PR-7000 (the first amp RF made). And the Pre-Z, then a few Pre-Pre-Z.

I remember them. We had a local shop that did a nifty isobaric enclosure with 4 volcano 10's in one cubic foot of airspace. It didn't sound all that good but he sold the $hit out of them for the cool factor.

I still have my SS Ref. 604, 500, 6.0, and continuum... Those, in my opinion, were the best amps ever made... Never had a problem 1 with any of them... How bout those SoundStream SS10R's, The "Velvet Hammer"... The good old days... I miss them, things were so much easier and laid back then...
