that makes absolutely no sense, so say that just because it's in a sealed enclosure it cannot be loud. I personally hate the way ported enclosures sound (with the single exception of transmission line) I have 2 ID max 12D2 in .75ft^3 sealed each with 1200watts rms to each. at 38Hz I get close to 149dB. Mind you, this is an SQ setup. don't ever tell me sealed cannot be loud

A properly dont ported box will usually yield higher spl (granted the sub wasnt speficially designed to be sealed) But after switching to sealed after many years of ported, i will say I like the freq response a lot better. It will play anything and everything

Being able to manipulate the way can increase or decrease your spl. You can only manipulate the movement from the front of the cone in a sealed enclosure, putting that into another chamber would be a 4th order and then you can manipulate that output.
The more you can manipulate something, in theory the "louder" you can get it.
Now with ported you can manipulate both the front and back movement of the woofer. Then just apply the first paragraph's manipulation into this one. You can either manipulate the front, back, or both into chamber(s).

when powerebass states sub"a" is better in a sealed box....or any other co. then they have done lots of testing. they know sub limits too. i have ran 10x rms in daily setups on a sealed box...and done fine for many months. and ran rms in a ported box( way too big for sub ) with too much port area and tunnin to high and 10 mins later the smoke rolls....and it wasnt all that loud. i am with powerbass on this one. some subs do better sealed. now if we are outlaw spl.....thats a very small % of sales......

jay; first question WHY are u running idmax's when you work for powerbass??? dont drop props for quad i am sure he is running a type of bandpass, lol.
marty; you can get loud sealed but need to use more cone area. you know taking a spl sub and putting it in a sealed enclosure ur not going to yield the same output if you have enough space for the ported.
ez; probley failure happened because of playing below tunning and brought the subs to mech max before the sealed one did. how big was ur port too?
i dont have to go into detail here about the higher sen and less power needed eather with ported to get a higher output.
sealed only subs have softer spiders and need the back pressure. one sub i loved from powerbass was the es series and they got loud but couldnt go with more than 15sq" of port per 12" or you would loose output and sub from mech failure.

I don't have any powerbass eqquipment. I built my system before I got here. I have friends all over the industry, and i've built my system to sound exactly how I like it. Plus, it's all pretty customized, so changing anything will require a rebuild.
here are some pics of my stupid Hybrid (it's the second slowest car on the road...right behind the Xb) It's the best sounding hybrid on the planet, though.
Morel MT-23 tweeters Vifa custom built 7" midbass IDmax 12D2
2 Eclipse XA2000 reworked to raise rail voltage Eclipse EA4100 reworked to raise rail voltage
I built it for SQ, obviously. I have zero processing, except what is built into the HU. I'm even running custom passives XOs that I built on the front stage.
I don't have to use my company's product. I'm loyal to the industry. I'll be in car audio for the rest of my life, and I'm sure I'll work at several more companies before I retire. I won't work for a company whose product I can't stand behind, though.

pimp...my point is that some subs do very nice in a sealed box, and i did state that just spl (not sql) ported is louder...but who would ever say you can be loud sealed....and the ported box want the right one for the sub....i did state that too....but jay.....if i worked for sparkomatic(sp) i would run it....(would never work for them...but you get the point)when my shop was in OR back in 03.....i ran powerbase in my demo....and it was the black line subs for 8 months with 1200watts rms on the 5 15's...and 3 6 1/2 chrome comp in the door and 1 5 1/4 coax chrome in the kicks with about 400watts a side....it slammed ...did 143.2 on a TL legal but its what kids in h/s could pay for....

Jay that is one thing that was strange about eclipse was they had those Ti subs and i have personally seen 20k+ rms run threw them many times, no big amps?

Don't get me started. That was a CONSTANT arguement between sales and R&D. R&D thought the product lines should match, so that there were amps and subs that could be paired. Sales didn't think they could sell them, so no big amps. They came out with a 1200 watt rms ICE power amp last year FINALLY. That's as big as they are going to get though.

Pretty sure he meant to quote the post questioning why eclipse never did any big power amps, not the one he did. Didnt they have a 2kw amp a few years back?

but the Ti pro's couldn't reproduce sound below 60Hz. Now that I don't work there, I can say things like that. That was a Vannin Gale design, in conjunction with Thilo from TC. Unfortunately, Vannin isn't in car audio anymore. I really wish he were, we've lost another great engineer to home and portable audio.
