yes it would smother the fire by covering the basket and ports. fire needs oxygen to burn...

and why not he was putting around rms power to them and they have a 3yr warrenty. it's not like he had 5k per sub. if i still carried powerbass i would warrenty them. powerbass needs to look into why this happened or they could be responsible for more car fires...

I don't think I would warranty the subs because you don't have pictures or videos of what was going on before that happened. It is the same thing as watching people abuse their subs by plugging them into a wall socket.
Not that these folks would do it but how do you know they didn't do something for them to catch on fire. I know guys that would blow a sub up then plug it into the wall and take it back for warranty just to get a new sub. Others might decide to set it on fire after they blow it up.

If you had that running at 1ohm, then you are pouring high current through the vc's. Also, your installation is DANGEROUSLY messy. I'm surprized you haven't had a fire before this. On the right, you have a large battery held in place by the sub, on the left you have wires pinched between the sub and the amp. That's just not safe, my friend. Proper installation is more important than ANYTHING!!!

yea the install is a mess correct but what dose running the amp at 1ohm have anything to do with it. the amp is class D, NOT a high current amp. sorry but running high current threw the vc's is totally ignorant statement.
