we charge higher labor on equipment not purchased from our company. be it best buy, the internet, or our "competition"... oh wait, we don't charge more, we don't discount our labor as much.

well deafy that is still going on and we were still making money not as much as before that but now it's way worse...
my point was too many shop owners displayed their piss poor attitude (online as well as on site) and refused to do anything that resembles good customer service. Like they were doing 'us' (consumers) a favor for being there.
My money is on the fact that a majority of shop owners today would kill to turn back the clock and actually work with the kid that claimed to find X product online for $50 cheaper than what 'you're' selling it for. The profit margin might not have been to 'your' expectations, But when times were good.........they were driven away like their money wasn't good enough for 'your' shop?
DrBass hit the nail on the head. "Business is far from dying, it's just changing, you better change with it". Too many shop owners refused to do so despite all the chances a few years ago. It was too convenient to blame someone else trying to make money (internet store owner, etc). But now all the sudden shop owners are willing to change? Why wait until absolutely necessary? Or in some cases, after it's too late?
It's a damn shame that it took a weakened economy to pry some owners' head from their anus. Hopefully, when things turn back around it doesn't revert back to douchebaggery and non stop bitching about how we, the consumers, are killing the industry by "bargain hunting".
It shouldn't take hard times for someone like Neill Barber to come on here and say "go to work and treat my customers well" (no offense nor implications toward neill). It should be like that during all times, good or bad. If this post would have been made a year ago, there would be a fraction of actual suggestions on how to keep the business in business listed. It would turn into a bitchfest about how some other capitalist was cutting into their profits.

i have always been there for my customers, always. i have gotten calls at 11pm asking if i have a few feet of ground wire i tell them to come over and cut off a piece no charge, no not friends, customers. i have always hooked up products a customer comes in with used just a hourly rate. if it dosent work after it is all installed they still have to pay. i have a small shop and i invite customers to stay if they want hand them the tv remote and show them the fridge, cant do any more than that. i also say that 60% of my customers give me a tip from $10-25, i guess for taking care of them...

We are up about 18% from last Year. We do installs on some outside product, and I usually end up making good money on add on sales. example, I had acustomer that purchased a DDin jvc dvd from another shops TENT SALE, and they wanted to charge him 350.00 to install it in a 08 silverado( that was labor only) I charged him 90.00 and he is spending about $2000.00 on up sales. so sometimes it works out real well.
