Treat your customers right EVERY time they walk in the door and make sure they always leave happy. Business is far from dying, its just changing, you better change with it.
Our business has increased every year for 9 straight years, but I continue to re-invest in better showrooms, better up to date displays, and better service.
The pie is shrinking a little, you just need to take a bigger slice.
I like pie

all of the audio shops around me mostly do bed liners, bed covers, brush gaurds, rims, tires, and do very little audio.
i have seen them stop doing anything but prefabs. personally i will close before doing common bolt on crap.
it's getting alot worse in my area with gas @ $3.79 a gallon for the cheap stuff.
i almost threw in the towel about 2 months ago and figured 1 more season i'll try it.
i dont advertise at all everyone knows where i am at and what i can do. it's all word of mouth because i dont have any unhappy customers. but people are loosing there homes, cars and everything. 2000 people moved out of my county last yr alone.

Thinks for being real Pimpin, as a mfg we have noctice hundreds of shops close there doors, many have changed with the times but that does not help when no one is walking in the door at all? i guess there are regions that still have some uptick and thats great to see, hope the tax rebates give audio a boost.

dont let customers buy what they want. Tell them they are only aloud to buy certain equipment or else their head WILL explode and their car WILL catch on fire.

5000 dealers? even if half of that was overseas, thats still 50 per state, not a chance.
I'll state a VERY unpopular opinion in here, but the shops that are dying more than anyone is the "boom" shops. If your trying to make your name as the SPL shop, your on a quick trip down. Maybe thats why you have so many dealers dying. I'm sure there not all boom shops, but that mentality is going the route of the net. Most competitors have limited budgets, so every penny saved is huge.
I may have one of the loudest vehicles on the planet, but we havn't done a SPL type setup in YEARS. There is simply no profit to be made in it.
I don't say it because I want to, its just a fact. I doubt Steve Cooks shop sells much SPL, and I bet Owen's shop doesn't either. Its good for a moderate amount of advertising, but its simply a hobby and a challenge other than that, that keeps us in it (SPL)

remote starts, alarms, and the occasional navigation unit help a lot. OEM integration is getting HUGE. but what really helps keep the business going is being big enough and good enough that our wholesale division generates a LOT of revenue from the car dealerships...leather, sunroofs, heated seats, rearseat entertainment.

i dont do just competition installs but everyone want it to get LOUD and be clean. see i dont mess with all the bolt on crap most of it take 0 skill and i wont even bother. i got into the game because of fabrication and customizing if you dont want eather go to a chop shop audio and get it put in. i make enough money not to have to mess with audio but i love to do it...

location is still everything.....get located inbetween circuit shi+y and best buy and fix all their fukups, and there are alot of spl setups still going in here in maryland... vinyl stickers and subwoffer enclosures, custom fiberglass enclosures and kick panels are still in demand....you have to grow with the market and be willing to make less profit just to sell the job....times are tough all over...thanks GEORGE W.

wait...not too long ago a majority of people posting in this thread would have been blaming the internet and transshipping.
