Just curious, as I only had one alternator fail on me a long long time ago. (1989) 90 amp alternator working an old Orion 4 channel, as well as a 2 channel Proton and Alphasonik, altogether only 600 watts, if I remember, but the alternator died in a month.
Right now with a measly 600 watts rms my truck lights both headlights and interior dim, even though I have a 136 amp alternator, I don't have any caps, I always thought they were hokie, but I never used one, so I don't know. Do they really make a difference?
I was considering getting a Hifonics 800watt rms mono amp and driving my 2 12" CVR's And utilizing the leftover 450RMS of my existing amp for a single 12" in a seperate box.
My alternator I think is sufficient, so will caps fix the dimming situation entirely?
For some reason, the CVR's I am using are allowing the amp to work harder, because I didn't really have this problem with my old JBL GT122'a in there using the same amp.

caps can help but batteries are better...try upgrading to a kinetik 2000 or 2400 or equivalent. that should be sufficient.

A cap is only going to help stiffen the voltage. What you need is a second batt in the truck. That will definately help with the lights dimming situation and will supply the amp with enough power to play on a constant level. Just get another batt or a larger batt than you have now with higher reserves so that there is enough juice to go to the amp instead of the rest of the vehicle fighting for current from the amp.

Even though those batts are really nice, he doesn't even need close to that much of an upgrade to make a difference. If you just want to keep one batt I would reccomend a Kinetik 1400hc under the hood with a big 3 and you'll be good. If you want to just add a second batt than off of 1400 watts a Kinetik 600hc or 800hc is plenty. There is no need for you to have overkill and spend $300 on a batt when all you need is a $100 batt to fix the problem.

well if he has a truck it will fit a 1800-2000hc. why put a smaller battery in and it not fit the tray right?
if it's a chevy truck like mine it has 140 amp alt and i am running alittle over 1200rms class a/b and was getting dimming. i charged mine for several cycles and it dosent now but GM batterys suck. i had a system in before i had 1000 miles on it and same thing. a kinetik 2000hc fits the tray already measured just dont drive it enough to both with the battery upgrade right now, but soon.
my advice...

It's a 2000 Dodge Ram, but ironically, I killed my battery not too long ago, and recharged it, so now I wonder if maybe the battery is just really undercharged and never fully recovered.
I have a couple deep cycles I use in my boat, any problem with just slapping in one of those? It's just in parallel correct?

Myself I am 26 and am engaged and saving for my weading, so assuming that everyone else is short on $ like I am I gave him the easy way out. And to answer the question about the deep cycles yes you could just connect one of them in parallel in your vehicle. If it is a lead acid batt I would reccomend finding some room under the hood or in the bed for it. If it is a dry cell or gel cell then you would be okay putting the batt in the cab of the truck or either of the other options. Like I said it would be easier to just buy a new batt for the stock location but a larger Kinetik would be overkill and cost a bunch, when a small Kinetik like the 600 or 800 would be half as much and solve the problem with ease. Also judging on the fact that you've had some JBL subs in your rides for about 12 years says to me that you don't like to spend money if you don't need to. I agree with this because I like the old saying "If it's not broke, don't fix it." So I would say if you have the deep cycles just sitting around and they'll do the job for you why go out and spend money for the hell of it.

Agreed. My recommendation was for the long term if he plans on upgrading to more power.
I also agree that if you have a couple deep cycle batteries around why not use them and save some money.
I wouldn't use anything but a sealed battery as a second.

I also agree with this but..
if you can afford 2 yellow tops buy 1 kinetik 2400. It has way more amps available for discharge than both yellows.

Yeah, i'm not really cheap, I have 4 kids I have to buy toys for too. ages 7,7,7 and 9.
As far as the old if it aint broke thing, that is true, these JBL's I had were comp subs back in the day and I had them mounted on a carpeted cutout matching the hole in the back of an 88 Firebird. was stealth all the way, and one of a kind back then. and they played great up until the day they finally let go, which was last year in my Dodge. I still have my Alphasonik amp too, but ironically that too just recently died.
I was happy with them, never competed, but had a 136 DB metered once but they were I think 150 watts going to them each, that was with my old Orion amp.
I got a cheap S.600 Lightning Audio, and it says 225 watts at 2ohm which is what I was running those JBL's at, and they sounded even better. The JBL's were only good for 140 watts each coil. they were DVC.
I know the CVR's are cheap, but I got 2 of the 07 12"s and with the same amp there is a huge diffence in SPL. Besides my eardrum rattling, the rearview is useless. I would love to have it metered but then I would probably wind up getting sucked in to going bigger and louder which has always been my motto.
It's already starting with me asking what I need to do to fix the current problem..
First a battery, then another 800 watt amp. And if I didn't have to squeeze the kids in the back from time to time, I would remove the seat and build a new box.
I put a couple pics in the subwoofer section. My box pics
I myself have 5 kids. Along with those my wife does daycare for 8 more!
All the more reason to tinker with my toys. lol
