The longest running auto sound competition in car stereo history is George "Doc Thunder" Reed's Thunder on Wheels Nationals. TOW competitions have dated back to 1981, when the event was originally called Rolling Thunder. The first TOW national event was held Thanksgiving weekend in 1984 at the Houston Astrodome. Wayne Harris took the gold in a Buick Regal dubbed "Eruption". The car had one of the first Rockford Fosgate Power 650's in it, a pair of horn tweeters in the armrest and 2 15" pro audio subs mounted in a ported box in the trunk. The system was powered up by a key in the dash, and when lit up, a series of lights flashed to indicate what components were powered. His SPL: 134dB. At the time, this stuff was totally unheard of.Auto Sound & Security, March 1993 issue. -------------------- RF Vintage Old School Fanatic, The Punch Car Audio for the dedicated sound enthusiast with a passion for performance! For those of you that haven't seen it, here's a video clip of George Reed at an event in 1987. Note that Wayne is working the camera:http://server1.termpro.com:8080/ramgen/sherman86.rm Wayne has several more of these posted in the video section of this site. Interestingly enough, we have a pretty good collection of documentation (letters to reps, old Rockford Philes, etc.) at Rockford that date back to the early 1980s. While going through a box of this stuff, I came across several letters and articles written by past sales managers, nationals, etc. in regards to parking lot competitions that George Reed was putting on in Texas in the early 1980s. For the most part, this was directed at our reps so that they could replicate what George was doing in other parts of the country. For those of you that don't know George, he still owns and operates a sales firm in Texas called Marketing Professionals.

Didn't think people remembered us old-timers... My store competed heavily in the old Rolling Thunder competitions... George really pushed the event and made Rockford-Fosgate and M&M household names... I owned a shop called "Car-Fi"... Those times were a lot of fun...
