I think it is due more to the flexing of the A pillars and roof than anything else.

My van has very solid pillars and the flex is nothing compared to lesser systems I've had in there with stock pillars so if the windshield remains relativly solid I believe it could survive alot more abuse.

Well, glass isn't made to flex and they have very low flex tolerance.

Laminated glass has more flex tolerance then non-laminated glass, heated glass has a higher shock tolerance then normal glass does too. Ive seen a windshield flex a full 1" (.5" each way) and not even try to crack.

3"? [Eek!] I have seen 1 to 1.5 inches but 3 inches is a little too much, unless it mounted on a 1.5" high Butyl rubber surround! [Big Grin]

It didnt help that the weld where the roof meets the windshield broke on the inside.

Windshields are meant to flex quite a bit. The side windows howere will not flex much before breaking.

The two main reasons why they break are flaws in the glass or a flaw in the surrounding area. With my old Blazer I started cracking windshields on a regular basis. Come to find out there was a slight high spot on the lower section where the glass set. Even though you have something seperating them, it won't stop it. And mine was only moving about 1" when it would break.

If you find this happening I would grand/sand the whole frame smooth before dropping another one in just to be safe.
