I am familiar with all of the audio shops in this area and all I can say is that I drove to Cincinatti (Carls stereo on wheels) for my last system cuz I wanted it done right not by the hacks in the area (especially audio trends what a pos operation)
btw my uncle was the owner of Civic for 40 years now he's retired and to that I say I sure miss the old days

yeah, civic USED to be the shiznit for sure. They had internet-type prices at a retail outlet. Maybe even cheaper! Is George your uncle? Great Guy!!!!!!! And you're right. Everywhere around here pretty much sucks. Damn shame u have to drive to Cinci for a good install.
But......... I took rukusix's advice and went to cartunes in Allen Park. There's a guy named john who built the $hit outta my ported box. All the corners are rounded, and the covering(vinyl/carpet) is immaculate. I'm REAL impressed. I'll post pics later if anybody wants to see it.

If that was the John that has worked there for ever than YES, he is a good installer. He and the manager there Tom, have been around as long as I have been into it....late 80's. Those guys installed my one and only professional installed systems back in the day....Alpine deck, Boston Pro speakers and Sub, PPI amp...
The Allen Park store is the home store for the chain and is about the best place to go....I think they still have the custom shop down the street where they do only custom work? No store front.
Other than them, I don't know where one would go for a high end install. Years ago, I taught myself how to install because of all of the shady shops around this area.
There was a Jam sound near me(8 Mile/Hayes)that was the worst chain shop that I have ever seem. Then there was another no-name shop on Gratiot that had some real charactors working there. One guys quoted my about $500-$600 for him to model me a ported box because of all of the thousands of dollars he had tied up into the software. Yeah...OK!
I learned how to install pretty quick after dealing with all of the bad and biased shops around...Everyone thinks they have the best products. It was tough for a newbie back then.
Nevertheless, once people saw what I was capable of, I ended up doing installs for family and friends through the years.
So...I gues the state of Car Audio in this are has not changed?

Not at all. Pretty much ALL jam sounds were terrible. Mickey Shorrs suck too. And with the exception of Allen Park, mostly all cartunes suck too. I also came to the conclusion years ago that i'd have to learn how to install my systems myself, because even though it may take longer, at least i know i did it right. Thing is, I suck at woodworking, so i have to have someone else build my boxes, lol!
Man, and how about Car Toyz (or whatever the name is this month) on 8-mile east of gratiot. Man do they SUCK! Bottom line is: learn to do it yourself. I may just have to take a woodworking class!

Ya George is my uncle, these days he's retired living in Florida but still asks me about my system and whats going on in the stereo world, I'm glad you're happy with your car tunes install like I said it's not easy to get something done good around here let alone any good shows I think this area has faded somewhat.

So does it really look that bad like in the movie
Actually, they didn't show that much of 8-mile in the movie. Basically what u saw was some of the worst neighborhoods IN Detroit(and the trailer park in Warren). 8-mile is the border between Detroit and the northern suburbs, and the street itself actually doesn't look bad at all.

I dunno man. I went in there recently and the prices were through the roof. They've got a hifonics amp in there for like $2000. I think it was a zeus. I asked about a goliath and they told me it'd be "like" $3500 Seriously, there prices are outrageous now ESPECIALLY compared to how they used to be.
