I think having the vehicle sealed and the mic at the drivers side headrest would be the best placement. I've done shows before where the police have come out and shut us down, and that was with it sealed up, so an open door rule isn't going to work. Some towns have a noise permit, but some don't, for them your show get's cancelled at the first noise complaint.
Power classes might be a good idea too. At the same time you don't want to be adding 9 more classes on top of the Bass Race and Db Drags classes too, that will increase the costs of running an event and reduce the chances of having trophies at them. Some veterans don't care about trophies, but for the new guys a trophy is what makes it worth competing. A framed piece of paper with your score is ok, but it doesn't make it worth the drive and time competing for the new guys, and some of us older guys.

at a USAudio show the technically astute Ed Lester came up with an idea that was really fun
1 car runs at a time. 1 sensor on the drivers window with the door open and the other sensor on the passanger floor. the two scores are added and divided by two. the sensors are on peak and hold everyone did it and really liked it

if it were for SPL then it would be like MECA, but for SQ it makes sense. Where is the drivers ear? At the headrest, and if the vehicle has the doors open it's going to be picking up all the noise from the outside, including everyone else's stereos. You can't get a good reading if the doors are open.

The only sensor used in SQ is to measure RTA (you can use an Audio Control RTA 3055 (or previous versions) or you could use the term lab RTA. ).
Currently no SQ organization uses RTA as part of SQ at all.
MECA has an RTA competition. All that is judged is RTA. A perfectly flat line is a perfect score and then there are deviations from there.
SPL is only done by USACi and they use the term lab for that

Door fully open.
Music 30 second avg.
Peak note gets 1 point for every hz under 80.
Example 147 avg with a peak at 37hz would be a 190 score.
Might have to five this a try

I'm still waiting for the day that the format I dream of gets utilized...5 minute average spl! Even if it isn't head to head, maybe give each car the option of 2 passes on the mic and keep the highest average for each, highest average wins per class!
No need to put power limits on a 5 minute run no woofer can handle "eleventy billion watts" for 5 minutes!
The average class d amplifier these days is 1200-2000 watts rms, plenty for 1-2 subs to be fully powered for 5 minutes...much more affordable, much more interesting than a burp, much more to do with the actual design than existing formats! db drag has come down to who has the most money...bass race is timing...lets give one to the people who work on tweeking what they have rather than he who has the deepest pockets!
class suggestions-
Enduro 1-2 Enduro 3-4 Enduro 5+
THAT'S IT! What could it hurt to promote something like that for a year just to try it out? Not alot of classes, not alot of cost to competitors, AWESOME starting point for newcomers, think about it, your average kid on the street has a pair of subs on a 1200-2000 watt rms amp! This would give him a true chance as most street systems can play for 5 minutes np in the first place!
Only other special rule for this, spl must be achieved at 60hz and down or it goes red and they get a dq!
with the exception of those ideas outlined above, all db drag racing rules would apply...easy for crossover members from db drag to try it out and totally excellent for newcomers at the local shops!
