For sure. I feel sorry for people that tow cars. I'm lucky with my 30+ mpg but it's still not cheap.

my truck gets 16.3 driving around, dropped to 15.9 with the trailer empty.... next weekend I got about a 400 mile round trip with the trailer and the new van... I see 1X shows having a crappy turn out and mulit-pointers being packed....

I'm gonna bet that most of the points are gotten early, before the supposed fuel price hike that the summer is gonna bring us. most people will get points and then wait till finals, maybe a show here and there but probably not every weekend

I know I have seen a big effect on dirt track racing. Lot of people racing 1 night instead of 2, and staying closer to home more often...

then I guess you have to drive 300-400 miles for a show like we up in Maine do (and other parts of the country of course)

I think the fuel prices may affect some people who tow. I think instead of people quiting the sport, it will make people change the way they compete. Maybe instead of having the big heavy systems, some may choose to build smaller or use a vehicle they can drive to shows. True draggers won't quit. For me it's a hobby and social event that takes my mind away from the stresses of a work week. I really think that the price of new equipment to keep up with the competition year after year would outweigh the price of fuel. ie DD Z motor subs.
