I don't want to see vehicles banned either but there is a fact that a CRX's, Panda's will have an advantage over other cars. With them thinking of just playing music rather than test tones the Crx will still have a huge advantage over most vehicles.
I do agree that if you are going to ban CRX's you might as well bad Explorers, Yaris's , VW Golf's, etc... These other vehicles may not be as loud as CRX's but they are up there. I don't know of other solutions but these are the facts.

I dont like the idea of music being played. it should be an option. When people think off sound-offs they think of guys playing a note to be the loudest. Not music. And also what about a lesser amoun of subwoofers? 2-10s instead of 3-10s are we able to be in Street Stock A, or do we have to compete in Street A. The woofer requirements for these classes should be the same as the street classes.

Most everyday car audio people dont even know about tones until they pull up and get their ass handed to them by one.......

I also don't agree with the banning of vehicles (except commercial). Though the CRX may appear to have the advantage there are other cars that could do very well in that format.
As for music being played...the average person has no idea what tone bursts are. They only experience it at a show. The typical point of reference is bass eminating from a car passing by. I think music would be a great format.
On a side note: by making the format music it allows for us to build for multiple formats if we so choose. (ie: Street Stock B and Bass Race 130-139.9)

i really hope we dont play music if i wanted to do that i would be n bass race. u think most cars are made to drive on the high ways. nhra cars are made 2 go down the track as fast as possible not for durability. if you look they max the motors out so much that sometimes they break mid track. thats what dbdrag is pushing things 2 the limit.

quote:Originally posted by Empire Audio-Mike: If we are looking at systems that are put in to cars at a normal shop then lets go over what I would do when I was installing.
Normal Use - Everything I built for street cars had normal use everywhere but a lot of things were custom.
Make the rule reflect what people are doing in street anyway.
Subs/Subs Boxes - I would package something together that would sell for a decent markup subwise and I would either build a nice box or grab a prefab off the shelf. The one thing that was consistant was that I NEVER let a car go out with exposed wood unless it was an SPL car.
I say make a rule that sub boxes must have permanent covering.
Amps - I think 90% of amps I sold were non-strappable. I did sell a lot of amps and then had the people come back to add a second one to run a subs per woofer. The only problem is that not all of them were mono amps. I could sell an A/B two channel pretty cheap for just the subs, and tell the customer that later when they got more money they could move it to the highs. They get more money and buy a 4 ch for highs and another 2 ch for the second sub. I also had kids buy a 4 channel using half for subs and half for highs. Later after buying another amp they used the 4 ch bridged to 2 for subs. The rules right now award another amp for buying a monoblock.
Why not limit it to either 1 amp regardless of channels or a single monoblock amplifier. Help out the shops. I know if I have a kid that gets bumped up with a 60x4 when someone else has a pair of 2000Ds I just lost a customer.
Podiums - Never put one in a street car, and get questioned about my podium whenever I bring it out. Usual question...How do you work the radio when its in the trunk?
Podiums not needed in a street car.
Power Wire - I would always try and get 2 if not 4 runs in the car on install. I would charge for the wire and labor on the first run of wire. Any other wire bought that day was 1/2 price and labor was free, up to 2 powers and 2 grounds.
I think a normal limit on power wires would be a good thing, but I know I built cars that after 2 wires I told them its cheaper to add another battery then 2 more wires.
Battery/Alt - I always tried to sell upgrades to both. I just used Kinetiks calculator to find the batteries. One thing I did notice was they usually recommended HC2000s just more of them as the wattage went up. I had a scientific method of figuring out the alt. If the amps cost more then the alt I put in an alt before adding batts. I also don't want open conductors so every battery has to go in a battery box.
I would say look at what the industry says for alts/batts and go on that.
Walls - I've never put a wall in a car that wasn't for SPL. When judging I have also had to try and explain that the box is 1/2" too tall and is a wall. Catch-22 on some installs. Most people just build to the top of the back seats in an SUV.
I say that you can build to the top of the rearmost seats and the enclosure has to be in the cargo area only.
These are just my ideas and they may be wrong.
Wow !!!! I don't think I have ever agreed with a post more. I think you are really on to something. I haven't posted here in awhile but finally saw something that I had to reply to. I think a few details are missing but you eluded to them such as.....
Custom fiberglass in front or behind the b-pillar work as long as it is not done to manipulate the mics. It should maintain stock general shape in front.
As for amps I sort of see what you mean but I think a limit the way Wayne has it is great also. Amps used only for mid's a highs should not count and be able to be mounted anywhere as long as it does not mess with normal use.
Podiums I totally agree with you.
Batteries should be limited by size not quantity. This will let people run a wider variety, besides 800CI is too big. I think that for SS A a size limit of 650CI would be good. I believe that will allow a Optima or Hawker 1700(I believe that these under whatever name are the most widely used in real street cars )but eliminate the larger special batteries. For SS B 1300CI. If someone wants to run 1 1300CI battery or three 400CI such as many stock batteries so be it. You can only get so much power from so much space as long as you are limiting the type to standard batteries so why not?
Real street car run the system from alt's. Very few have more then one, but I guess I could see 2 in SS B but not sure even then. Nuff said about that.
Walled cars are not street cars. The only problem with the seat height is hard to check. I would add that the box cannot be higher then a line from the rear seats to the bottom of the REAR window. This is easily checked and very realistic and safe.
Wayne I hope you read this and write it up, Mike is a genius.

This is STREET STOCK, not your Street A, B or C classes. So to answer your question, YES these cars should ALL be made to drive on the highways. LOL
I think you just mixed up Street Stock and Street.

Street stock doesn't have to be such a big deal. Any judge or show promoter that has a clue will know what vehicle should be in street stock and what vehicle should be in street or street max.
I think the criteria for the class is looking good, and the bumping up of competitors will be easily offset by the renewed interest of noobs and more consumer type installs, which after all makes up 99% of the 12v industry anyways, we just need to have a place for them to play too.

I think Street Stock is a great idea. This should prove to be an excellent class for most anyone with a small to moderate budget to play. For the most part I like the rules for the class...with the exception of walls being allowed. Being a retailer/installer myself, I rarely see anyone on the "street" with a walled vehicle. Other than that the battery limit, conductors, and the certified amplifier list are a good idea. Props to Wayne for attempting to make it easier for people to compete.

I also question the idea of walls being allowed. My thought would be that the install should be no taller then the seats, this will also keep things safer.
Along the idea of ,ever do an install like that. I don't think I have ever seen a street car with a podium either. I would love to know the reason for them being allowed. I am not questioning it but would love to understand the reason.

at events, we see competitors with all different box sizes. Underwindow line, at window line, above window line. In rear seat. Rear seat taken out, Wall, no wall. 2-3 differnet prefab boxes piled on eachother cause its louder ...
This was the intentions of SM, to allow for all these kinds of everyday builds. You can limit the size of the enclosure unless you want to limit your competitors also. This is about attracting new business.

i'd agree with steve. i see all types of installs.
more & more i am seeing guys with walls in daily drivers, cuz its the cool thing to do. and like steve said, guys with boxes piled on top of each other, etc..
guys building at home, are not measuring thier boxes based on the front window line. they arent building thier boxes and testing with tones, they are popping in thier favorite cd and seeing how it sounds.
how many people here showed up at thier very first dbdrag event and had no idea what a test tone was, or for that matter, which one you were supposed to play.
i like the idea that its music, and a peak hold, and its for every day normal guys. there is no skill involved, such as in bass race, and they arent competing against someone that does this day in day out till the wee hours of the morning getting every last tenth squeezed out of thier box.
i look at street stock as the minors compared to the majors. or like the training wheel class, that new poeple can get acquainted with dbdrag with, and as the industry is hoping, will get More manufacturers and more retail establishments involved, to help dbdrag grow.

I agree with the above to a point. The "newbies" may not intentionally mean to exploit the rules and use a wall etc. to gain an advantage but once the competitive juices get flowing they will learn where the advantages are and use the "loopholes" to there advantage, it' just in our competitive nature to do so. One way to take care of this would be to not allow completly sealed walls. This would allow enclosures of any height but not be able to fully seal off the area behind the b-pillar. Also some have suggested to "only allow beginners in Street Stock for say 2 years or so. I completly disagree with this. Who are we to tell someone that they HAVE to move up at a certain time. Don't take away there fun, let the competitor decide when or if it is time for them to move up. Maybe it's not in there budget to make the move to Street. Maybe there just doing it for fun. If your worried about seasoned vets moving down...I doubt it. But if they feel they need to, so be it. Atleast the newbies are going against simalar equipment. The skills will come with time.

If there is going to be a ban on cars like crx's and panda's then I do agree that any vehicle without a trunk should not be allowed in these classes. It may not be a crx but an integra is similar in size and hatch capicity, or any hatchback for that matter. If one car is being banned because it's too loud then just limit street stock to trunk only cars. No pickups, mini vans, suvs, hatchbacks, motor cycles, skateboards, or soda cans. Trunks only, if there is a ban on certain cars. Just my two cents on this topic.

Also what determines entry level equiptment? Are two l7 12's considered entry level? What factors are going to be considered when deciding what equiptment is allowed and not allowed? Imo, entry level or mid level equip. should be determined by cost, power, and availability. Some would say that a DD 2500 woofer is entry level, but when you compare it to the average woofer like a JL W0 there is no comparison. Does that mean that there will be a ban on certain companies products from being used beacause their entry level stuff is just too good? This definately needs to be assessed before the class is finalized.
