Well guys, I passed my CPAT a few weeks ago, and its nationally credited.

So I'm trying to find a job as a fire fighter.

Not having any luck so far...anyone know if their local fire departments are hiring?

Shawnee Heights Fire Dept is always hiring here in Topeka KS.

Also the fire dept out at the airport is always hiring - but there you have to serve double duty as part of the the police force for them - and they will pay to certify you.

You are gonna want to look into the larger cities otherwise you might as well be bagging groceries.

Northern VA fire departments had an open house drive in October. They may still be hiring. I'll look into it. DC is just down the road; Baltimore is a few miles North. As for airports, we have 3 major ones around here that might be hiring too (Dulles, Reagan, BWI).

Good luck dude!!

bah! screw that!

I can make that much picking up cans for 8 hours a day lol.

There are a couple of fire depts here that are a few hours away in SMALLLLLLLL towns, like towns I couldn't see myself living in.

They start out at 48 a year with a 10k sign on bonus once you get out of rookie school. But I couldn't see myself living in a town that is the size of a nice hotel lol

i live in a town of 3,500 people, and the next town is only 75 people. its not that bad living in small towns.

fwiw - i think our local fire department is hiring.

Curious, what FD starts at 48 a year and the town is the size of a hotel? [Confused]

Wow... that's more than a rookie would make in Metro Nashville, and they've never heard of a sign on bonus either.

If that's what you really want to do, maybe you should go for it. A small town might be a good change of pace for ya.

I know here they start you at 42k, no bonus though. Bad thing is it doesnt go up much from that think top is around 55k.

I was over exaggerating.

Sheffield, Tuscumbia, and a couple of other "towns" are hiring. But I'm not gonna live in a small town. Basically at this point they are begging for people. But there has to be a reason for that much of a turnaround right?

Low pay,

Long hours,

Not likely to be promoted,

These reasons come to mind. [Confused]

How about the fact you could DIE IN A FIRE. That would discourage me right there.

probably because it is in a small town not enough action to keep them interested and as for the pay ff pay very well and the hours are awesome and u have the job security of a government job
and u can jump in ranks easily as long as u can interview well.

are u ems certified and fire fighting or jsut have ur fire fighting certification?
if you have both then you are alot more likely to get a job in a bigger town that pays well

i'm CPAT and EMS certified.

Ambulance Service pays JACK though, 12 dollars an hour screw that!

I'm doing swing shift on EMS though, basically when they are a person I go in and work for 16 dollars an hour. Make around 100 bucks a night but it stays pretty boring. I wouldn't like to do that forever

Memphis was paying 52,000 and a 10,000 sign on bonus for ems. Cleveland lost a few guys to them.
