check this out...

http://folding.stanford.edu/FAQ-ATI.html

in other sources, I've seen where they've tested GPU's to be 30-40x the speed of CPU's doing the same computations... amazing.

This is the only application out for the masses right now taking advantage of GPU processing... but if other programs folow suit, it could revolutionize computing [Eek!]

PS: thanks

I run F@H on my work computer. Grid.org's United Devices + UC Berkeley's BOINC at home. F@H on my laptop worked OK, but for some reason UD & BOINC (SETI + Rosetta) seem to work better for my laptop.

I've been amazed by the advances we've been able to make via GRID / Distributive Computing. My first DC project was an encryption algorithym. It ran through cracking 32 - 128 bit encryption. Then (if memory serves correctly), the developers put it up against 256 bit encryption. Granted, this was when IE shipped with 32 - 64 bit encryption and Netscape was the only 128 bit encryption browser out there. The argument for 128 bit or less encryption was because the rest of the world couldn't access & process those high of security standards. I think that was in '98 or '99. Been a while, so I may have a few (if not a lot) of the details off.

I've been running UD for 5 or 6 years now. F@H for 2 years. SETI@Home for ~6 years. Rosetta@Home for ~1 month.

Neat thing, IMO, about UD & BOINC is that they'll throw different projects onto their system. On UD, we crunched through Anthrax strains, various cancer strains, etc. For those of us who want to help out, but don't have the background to do the research or the wallet to donate, Distributive Computing is a very cool thing, IMO.

Thanks for the update on porting these over to the new GPUs from AMD / ATi. It'll be very interesting to see if nVidia follows suit. If the CELL processors take off and do the uber-godly type of numbers they are supposed to do, I wonder if IBM will get into (back into?) graphics cards.

Much fear: CELL CPU & GPU combo?! The AMD X2 5000+ & FX-62 chips were smokin' fast. The new C2D E6600 & 6800s are smokin' those. Can't wait to see what the CELL processors do. Not to mention what AMD & Intel do to combat CELL. I remember when a PII-450 & a Duron 750 were both top dogs; not to mention when my P4 1.7 GHz at work (now pitifully eclipsed by the 3.4s).......

I was reading up on supercomputing today, also. I'll have to find the link for ya, but...

they said with CELL CPU plus GPU combos they are expecting to see peronal computers with the capability to do 100+ gFlop/s [Eek!]

and 1 petaFLOPS supercomputers will be here by 2008, and the one they're building in Oak Ridge is going to be for public use. Amazing stuff going on recently, IMO.

update:link

hours of reading here

I prefer this desktop, I would have already had it, but a corrupted download of a linux distro set me back until I have more free time
