Was on the phone with linksys over the coarse of 5hrs!!!!!!!
I had an xboxlive tech support guy on the phone for over an hr and the best advice I got was to go buy an "official xboxlive" adapter."
This is gehy.......
My xbox is saying that there is no adapter hooked up to it........ it is plugged in correctly and running.....
I am running through my Linksys WRT55AG router as I type this so I know the router is working......
Then on top of all this the xbox is asking for ip addresses and subnet masks and dsn numbers.........
I have entered the ip addresses and the dsn stuff........ but I dont know how to get a "subnet mask"
I am gonna be completely honest here for a second........... I have had a computer for about 6 years and I know absofugginlutely NOTHING about it.
I have learned more about networking in the last 5hrs than I ever wanted to know...... I have spent about $200 and I still have no results. I am pissed
oh yeah and....

I just wanna play online against other people.....
I bought a router and xbox live...... my freind brought his wireless adapter. I already have the xbox and the games. I dont know why this is so hard.... it should have been a 5min process.

is it a null hub? (does it have an MAC address on the HUB?)
if its not a null HUB (if it does have a MAC address), this could be your problem. I've had similar problems... though I've not had that problem with an XBOX (I've always used null hubs with them). By that I mean, I have no experience using hubs with MAC addresses on XBOX's, so they very well may work fine... but its something to check.

I don't have a hub here with me now, but from what I remember, if its NOT a null hub, then it will have its MAC address on a label somewhere on it, probably the bottom (which might be completely wrong, because I don't look at the bottoms of my hubs often).
I googles your device... and I strongly suspect that it does have a MAC address.
I'll google to see if non-null modems are compatible with xbox live...

hey... why are you using that thing anyway? just connect the cat5e cable directly to your computer's NIC, fawk the hub. If it works, the hub is your problem.

All I do is plug my Xbox into my router and it works

null hub... one which is basically invisible, its kinda like a coaxial splitter.
cat5e cable... basic network patch cable, with RJ-45 conenctors
RJ-45 connectors... look like extra wide phone line connectors
MAC address... if a hub is non-null, then it has one. Therefore, the hub exists to outside computers. IP addresses can be attached to a MAC address, when logging on to a network (attempting to connect to xbox live). Depending on how a network is set up, it can have a similar effect as a proxy connection. This has the possibility of making anything behind the non-null hub invisible (like your xbox)... though this may not be your problem at all.
