what's the pay like? my best friend's dad became a driver a few years ago. they've always been in financial troubles so I never wanted to ask exactly how the pay went.

Not nessicarily sh1tty hours..... 1 of the companies I am looking at works all their drivers on the dock and lets them drive....... they get, at the most, 45hrs per week, every single employee is home every night. 8 paid holidays, 2 weeks paid vacation, full benefits, 401k, pay starts at $17.10 or .37cpm and I would be making over $20 per hour or .42cpm in 3 years. And they are closed on saturday and sunday.

I havent decided on a company yet....... so I really cant say what my pay scale is gonna be like.
I have talked to some companies that say I can gross $35k my first year out and I have talked to companies that said I could net close to $50k. Some have benifits, some get you home more often, some are just sh1tty deals, some arent that bad.
My instructor is a company driver for a teamster company and makes $.55 a mile and gets about 3,000 miles per week, + he instructs part time at the school at $20hr....... so the potential to make $80k+ a year is there. He gets full health, dental, vision, and 401k through his company.
Most company truck drivers average about $40k-$60k per year but there are so many different ways to be a truck driver that its hard to say how much I will make...... I could go out and buy my own rig and be in so much debt I couldnt afford to feed myself, or I could work my way up to 100 trucks and be a multi millionare, or I could drive local for $20 per hour.
There are alot of really good companies to work for and alot that are just out to use and abuse drivers for profit.
Another thing to think about....... as a whole the truck driving industry has an average turnover rate of 120%, if you get a dui or a wreck that is your fault you could easily be unemployed and unhirable.
