There is a Best Buy here opening up, and I am wondering if anyone here has or currently works for them. Wondering about if they are good employers.

Im employed with these clowns. [Razz] Read some stuff on BestBuySux.org . There arent many complaints from or about the bay. Its not bad but its not good. They are currently paying me pretty good so it evens out (well somewhat). If I were you I would not, repeat, DO NOT go on the sales floor. Sure they arent on comission, but IMO its worse. They talk about their stupid PSP's... numbers this numbers that. Talk to the 'Lead' (aka Instal Sup) and get an idea of what hes like. Some are cool and some are asses. Over all its not bad, but there are some things I would change instantly. Oh, you need your own tools too. Plan on spending at least $5-600 to start. [Big Grin]

I go in for the second interview on the 18th. They wont put me in the install bay because i am not mecp certified. That is a crock of sh*% imo. Its not like i have a buttload of experience, but its for sure i am not a total idiot. I can read diagrams, figure out ohm loads, build enclosures etc etc. So they said well i could do carfi (must be their lame name for mobile electronics, lol) sales. I am really doubting if i want to be a salesman as i know they dont work on comission. I duno if i will do it or not. Sounds like i should turn and walk the other way but i need only like 10 hours and i am curious as to if they will work with me.

That is BS. Out of the 7 installers we have, only myself and my boss are MECP Cert. 4 of the guys were hired WITH NO EXP at all. As I said above, Car Fi sucks. All in all, the company isnt too bad when their not bitching about the numbers. The discounts on the Car Audio are awesome. I got a NIB 9300 w/ 4yr warranty and the parts for like $502. They should work with your 10/hrs...(I bet thats why they wont bother with you in install). Theres 2 people that average that on out sales floor. BTW...count on 3 interviews and a drug test. [Smile]

So do you think if i said i could work 40 they would let me in install? How much does their starting installers make? I make around 10.60$/hr at my current job, and i know anything out there is going to cause me to take a pay cut (well not everything, there is one place here but they have a hireing freeze). I really do need to get out of the grocery store biz, i cant stand it any longer.

We were on a bonus system where starting pay was @ $8, and you got an extra 55% pay for 'in car time'. For me it worked out to almost $12/hr. They recently took away the bonus system and gave us a raise to compensate. I think starting pay is about $10-11 or so now. Right now we all have hiring allowances (allowed more people than were budgeted for). If you tell them you can do 40, it might work....depends on what they have going on right now...

Just be persistent, that will show them youre ready. [Big Grin]

I agree with all of that. We do custom **** all the time tho. Had a restored 65 Dart in the other day. Most of the **** is pre-fab and not much fun. But youll get to know your way around well, and they cover you if something bad should happen. One of my guys put 2 holes in the roof of a mini-van while installing a mobile video. No problem.. The store is still in construction so i guess i am meeting with the sales managers. at least that was the guys title on his nametag. He was all asking if i ever used any sony explode. i almost laughed and piped up and said yeah, to plug into a wall socket so it will explode. lol. what kind of products do you guys carry? in case i wind up having to be a salesman (assuming i get hired) i would like to learn the most i can before the store opens.

Update: I landed the job as an installer. Pay is crap though, but i guess once i get all certified things will go up. I got a list of tools that i need, and i think the main thing i need is a drill. Can you supply me with a list of tools that you feel is nessisary for the job?

On another note, bestbuy is stealing the shop sup. from RC Willey here, haha. I guess he has around 23K worth of tools. Maybe he will have an o-scope so i dont have to haul mine around.

Congrats.

Drill is a must. I have 2. 14.4 DeWalt, and a 9.6 Right Angle Milwauke (sp?); all the necessary bits and tips. Youll need Crimpers (Klien) and stripers, cutters, etc. Sockets, 7mm, 8mm, and 10mm most often used. A Hook Tool, aka Cotter Pin Extractor. Panel popper, window crank removal tool. Regular wrenches youll probably never use, I have 2 drawers full, hardly ever use them. [Roll Eyes] DMM, BB frowns upon ye old test lites. A tool box, I have a nice Ball Bearing Craftsman (was just under $500) and it beats a few of the other installers by a long shot. Its funny how they wrestle to get their **** open. [Big Grin] I spent a good $1500 to start and have added very little since. You can get away with a few hunderd tho.

Cool. I have a little craftsman toolbox my parents bought me for xmas a few years ago. I have those sockets so i am set on that. I was thinking i could get away with a black and decker firestorm (~80$) till i could afford a dewalt. I will check harbor freight for the other stuff, as i am sure they will have it cheap. My dad is loaning me his ratcheting crimpers but i would like to invest in a quality set of standard ones too, (xcellite, klien, ideal, snap-on) as these things are quite bulky. Thanks for the list. [Smile]
