Ive decided that even though I enjoy computers and that a career in computers has a staggering salary, I think I will be more happy in the field of mobile electronics. I know, everyone is going to tell me to go the way that provides the most income...but, Id rather be extremely happy doing something that made less money than be stuck somewhere doing boring work and making a killer living. Computers interested me a great deal in the beginning and still do, dont get me wrong....but they are becoming so boring that I cannot concentrate in my classes. But you give me a new issue of AS&S, CA&E, Car Sound, or what have you...or an evening on the internet and Ill be enthralled for hours on end with audio.
The past few months I have read several articles in the various well respected mobile audio magazines on the subject of a career in this field. The future looks bright I must say.
I would like to become a professional installer and perhaps have that lead into a position at one of the many manufacturers. (one article in particular was the one with Gary Biggs and Fishman in AS&S this month, that article as well as others really inspired me to persue my feelings.) Ive been doing minor installs for friends (building boxes to replace pre-fabs and what not), and not charging them for the first time. The only thing I have been asking them is that they tell people about my work quality. I do not have the foggiest idea on a reasonable starting price for a basic box (labor costs to add onto the materials price), nor starting prices for anything else. I have thought of calling the local shop and getting their prices and maybe downsizing them a bit for the local guys, friends, etc.
This shop mentioned above is a well respected shop and I would love to get a job there installing and selling equipment. But every time I ask if they are hiring, they always say "no, because the original crew is all they need".
Granted, I think its because I have no training. And this is where I believe I need to begin. I have noticed in several mags, ads for MECP, RTTI, RITOP, the Installer Institute, etc. What do I need to do to begin my training? Are there any classes I may be able to take at the local technical college? I need all the help I can get guys.
Thanks
