Brainbench.com offers MANY on-line tests that you can take to earn a certification in several different topic areas. They include exams/certs in communication skills, MS Office products, Windows 95 - 2K, Adobe products, Macromedia, Allaire, Oracle, etc.
They do offer quite a few free tests, but some of them do come at a small fee. I think they charge between $10 & $20 for those exams.
Once you pass the exam(s) (some certs only require 1 exam)and earn your cert - they will send you a confirmation e-mail. You can then add that cert/confirmation notice to your Resume - print & on-line versions.
These guys are not just a fly-by-night deal. People who have earned their certs have been hired into Fortune 100 companies.
For IT people, these Certs and exams may not replace the A+, Net+, MCP, MCSE, CNA, etc. exams/certs. However, they are respected and do show future/current employers that you are serious about advancing your knowledge. Many IT professionals who have earned the above Certs have used the Brainbench tests as practice exams. The people I have talked to at TechRepublic have thought very highly of Brainbench tests/certs.
I'm prolly rambling, but - hopefully it's a useful ramble

I forgot to mention, I think that Brainbench is open to new exams and certs. So, it may be a wise move for car audio install schools to have some universal exams on their site.
*smack forehead* - I can't remember the name for car audio installation certs....too many acronyms from 3.5 days of meetings with government agencies
BTW, I have taken their exams, but I gain nothing by mentioning them or having anyone sign-up via these links. I just figured that y'all might be able to benefit from the site - if so, good luck !!
