wondering if any of you guys might be able to point me in the right direction..

i'm looking for a new headunit.

my favorite panasonic is 5 years old now. it still works perfect, but its about lived its life.

more importantly i'm looking for something more to todays current technology.

the panasonic plays cd/mp3's and has an aux input for an mp3 player.

what i am looking for is a headunit that accepts either a usb port like a thumb drive, or a one with an sd card on the front.

my cd skips already in my truck, and i havent even installed my amps yet. i dont want to run a podium this year. and i hate trying to use my mp3 player or my cell phone as an mp3 player.

i was at walmart, and DUAL has a headunit that has cd/mp3/dvd, and then also has a usb port on the front so you can plug up to a 1gb thumb drive right into it. it also has an sd slot on the front that you can plug a card right into it.

i like the idea of using an sd card or thumb drive, or even plugging my portable usb harddrive into it, and eliminating the problem we all face with skipping.

but, i do not like the idea of buying a DUAL headunit.

anyone know of any other headunti that take sd or usb on the font?

Jay, I believe JVC used to have a head unit with USB input on the front.

Also Amanda has a pioneer that has a usb input. Some eclipse units had usb and a sd card behind the face.

What about just getting an ipod? You'd have a lot more options since almost everything has ipod control these days

i just really hate ipods. and the need for cables and crap.

i want just a simple headunit in the dash.

i would prefer to just plug in the sd card. then its just hidden away and no worries.

but if i had to use a cable, then i would rather use my harddrive over an ipod. my portable is 400gb, and its just slightly larger than an ipod touch.

with that space, i can have all my muisc on hand for demos, as well as videos .

i have a flip out dvd player/screen thats goign in my center console, but i wont be using it as my primary head unit because it lacks alot of functionality.

i'll look into pioneer if eclipse doesnt have pause.

yeah I used eclipse head units in my old white truck. Had to use a in line gain controller and it was a big PITA

I can't remember the number of the pioneer Amanda just bought but it has a usb cable that comes out of the back. Seems like that would work perfect for ya bro. Also has 2 auxillary inputs so it would work great if you wanted to run dvd audio through it as well as use usb or even an ipod if you decided to add it later

thanks for all the suggestions everyone.

i'm really diggin the kenwoods! but maaaan those are pricey.

i like the jvc and pioneer as well. and a better price.

at first i was really hooked on something with an sd card input, but the only ones i have found are dual and boss.

but ater thinking about it... i like the front usb inputs better, because i can jsut use my 400gb external hdd and have ALL my music at hand, instead of transfering select songs to the sd card.

thanks again... now i gotta save some dollars and make a descision [Smile]

if your going to bassrace off a usb, i know my pioneer 600ub has a delayed unpause on usb inputs(including ipod)... which just warranted its removal and sale.

You're harddrive being 400gigs might be an issue.
I know the Pioneers have the following limit... harddrive must be 250gb or smaller, draw 0.5Amp or less power, and be formatted in FAT32.

Kenwoods must draw 0.5Amp(500milliamp) or less current from the USB. Must be formatted in FAT16 or FAT32. I don't believe they have a size limit.
If the drive pulls more power, and has an external power supply, it might work.

I'm a big fan of the Kenwoods. I have last years KDCX792 and it works great. They all have Pause on the remotes, and do a roll when coming out of attenuate.

Someone mentioned the Pioneer DEH-P6000UB(600 in the Premier) from last years line-up. The only problem with that model and higher was NO PAUSE on the remote. It could only be accessed through several menus on the deck itself.

I'm not a fan of the JVC's due to the high failure rate of the cd spin and eject motors. I sold a lot of them from 2007 and 2008. I even owned two. Nearly all of them had to be sent in for service, and that's a LOT of decks.

I'm not a fan of having USB on the front of the deck. I was cleaning my car, bumped the thumbdrive with my knee since it was sticking out, and the USB port never worked again. USB port on the front can also be an issue on any deck where the entire face flips open. Can cause issues with clearance in some cars. Also the music will always stop playing when you open the face to change cd's, if you use them.

For Kenwood 2009, I would look into the KDC-X993 and KDCx-693, both with rear USB. for front usb, look into the KDC-X493.

For Pioneer/Premier, I would look into the DEH-P510UB. This model has two USB ports, one front, one rear. Dot matrix OEL screen, easy to see. It DOES have pause on the remote [Smile] .
The DEH-P710BT will also have the twin USB. It adds a great Bluetooth interface with voice dialing. The microphones are still just ok, but decent. Much better interface than using a deck with an add-on module. The remote control does not have pause, it is very simple, but uses Bluetooth instead of Infrared, and is designed for steering wheel mount. Can do I-tunes tagging with the HD radio module. No pause on the remote may be a dealbreaker [Frown]

All the Premier and Kenwood Excelon models i listed all have 3pair of 4V RCA's and built in crossovers.

I hope this has been helpful. Any other questions, just ask. I know my decks [Blob]

The Alpine 102 has a fast pause and is a soild deck.

Not as many flashy things but the output is worth it. It gets to the point and is very user friendly to setup and use unlike a lot of high end HU's that can take 10-15 mins to setup.
