My friend recently came to me with a request to help him get his truck louder. Trying to bassrace a 139.9 with current equipment. 1 dd 3515. One punch 1000a2. It is a 1997 exploer limited. I looked at curent box and it was 5.15 cubes with a 72 sq inch port 27 inches long. I figured this box would be tune way to low for the truck and made a new box. I wanted to tune to 42-45hz for bassrace and to daily beat. I built to 3.5 cubes wiht 3 four inch areos. Started with 14inch ports. It tuned to 45hz, but only a 141.8. I then tried to lengthen ports to 18.5 inches. It did a 141.9 at 45hz. I then shortend ports to 12 inches and got a 142 at 45hz. It doesnt seem to matter what I do to ports, it always try to play 45hz. I cant quite bassrace a 139.9 with this, any suggestions?

Since the port length isn't affecting the final tune too much, you'll probably have to try a different enclosure size.
I would suggest 4 cubes with the 3 4" aeros.
Are the ports internal or external? We had good luck in a teammates blazer doing the sub up and the aeros firing back, external. One type-r 15" and one orion 2500d was doing a mid 148 on the dash.

Michael, try the woofer up and the ports to the driver's side with them being external. There's a competitor that I know from South Carolina that has an Expo with a single Nightshade 15" powered off of a Sundown 3000d and is doing a 150.6 on the dash at 54hz. His box is much smaller than the one that you built so maybe even play around with a smaller box.

when i had 2 15's in my 99 limited they were in 4.6 cubes with 6 4" external aero's.. With the ports tuned in it was tuned and peaking at 46. No deadening with a sunroof.
burped a 152.5 off a single mm4000

loudest setup in my explorer was sub up ports external to drivers side. only deadening was the front doors..inner and outer skins which gained me 0.2. always peaked in the 48-52 hz range. My peak dropped 2 hz (51 to 49) going from rear firing to side firing. My explorer was a 97 limited, leather, adjustable headrest seats with sunroof. Your visors should be two pieces so you can have one flap forward and one to the side...play with those a little aswell Cant be telling ya ALL the tricks!
The reason imo for it being louder side firing is you have more room left to right than you do front to back in an expolorer. The more room available the more port area you can use and still have the same port length.
The song i used for bassrace was bass mechanik-bass mechanik...same song bob perillo uses in the footage ive seen of his bassrace runs.
in your cars 45 hz peak seems a bit low. Is this a explorer limited sport? or a 4 door? One thing you could try is running external aeros and tuning to your 48hz range where the vehicle will most likely peak which will get your bassrace numbers up providing youve adjusted your song choice. But then the external aeros will allow you to change ports to longer ones for dropped tuning in daily driving.

For all of you that replied thus far. Thank you. I have a couple Ideas to try now.
I am not trying to get this to peak to high for DB drag. It is more of a daily beater and trying to keep it a little lower in frequency. I know if I tune higher and get closer to trucks frequency we would be louder. More than anything was my surprise to see as I adjusted port length, there wasnt a change in tuning. The giant old box that was huge and long ass port was tuned to the same as the new smaller box with areos. I crunched the numbers also, and we making 91VAC and 8.1Amps of current. Thats only 740 watts with a reactive load of 12ohms. Granted It started at 4ohms so it only trippled, so that is to be expected. I just never seen a box not be afected by the port length.

I know in an explored I built for a guy a few years back for 1 3515 I did 3.5 cubes with 40 sq inches of port tuned to 35 hz on a crossfire 2000d. Would do a 147 and change with everything firing back with no deadner at all. This was in like a 95 4 door.
Jammed pretty hard
