I have been asked the difference in these two woofers - so I asked and this is the answer I received. If you have more questions, I will get Polecat to answer - you hear that Tracy?
The new 2002 L5's are almost identical as the 2000/2001 model L7's. They have the same power handling, and specs as the old L7's. The only major difference is the L5 has a steel basket vs. a cast aluminum.
Now the new 2002 L7's have a few small motor changes, they have a new re-designed back brace, have better low bass output, new titanium injected cone, with a few mods to the cone, new cosmetics, new front/rear gasket for better sealing, wider surround for more Xmax than before, and a few smaller cosmetic items. So to boil it down, we needed to make a woofer that people could 'step' into from the Comp VR, but was better priced than the L7.
So the idea of a woofer that can share the Solobaric name, yet come in at a great value, the L5 was designed.

How long could an 2002 L715 last with 5,000w? Just asking because if I dont hit loud enough in street 1-2 I will go into ss1-2nw with 2 15's and 10,000w

That's well past the mechanical limits we publish on that woofer...so unless you plan on swapping quite often, I wouldn't put 5000 watts to a single 15"...

Well, ROB-BON used 4000 watts for awhile, but over 2500 per driver would be a coin toss. It would be really hard to tell, and I would hate to mis-lead you into thinking they would last for several shows at 4000 watts....sorry couldn't be more specific...

With all things being equal, are the 2002 L7's louder than the 2001 models or the L5's? If I bought all three(12" models) and tested all three with 1000W in a large ported box how would they compare with max spl? I am assuming that the 2001 L7 and the new L5 would be very similar but how does the new L7 compare?

To alma gates the 2000-2001 L7 did hold more power than the 2002 L5 150w to be exact old L7 12"=750w RMS 1500w max new L5 12"=600w RMS 1200w max TRUST ME
old sterio 2 12" L7's 2001 model on 1200w PPI Then on kicker xs-100 Now sterio 2 12" L5's on Directed 1100D Old system sounded better

The old system sounded better because you had extremely high quality class AB amps that offer excellent SQ along with tons of power.
The DEI is a decent amp, but isn't in the same league as the PPI (a1200.2 art series?) or the XS 100.

I've got a question, I'm going to be doing 4 12" L5's (2002) and 2 JBL BP1200.1 OR a Orion XTR Pro 2400. Im leaning more towards the jbl's because I'm not filthy rich and cant come up with $700 at one time. So I figured Id buy a jbl now and buy one later.
But my question is.. I only have 1 L5 right now. Should I sell my L5 and start buying the 2002 L7's? Would I hear a difference at all? People say I wont and it wouldnt be worth the money to spend an extra $100 for the L7's.
BUT, say I wanted to compete in some local car audio shows we have around here (which isnt much, a bunch of teens or audio express puts it on). Say later on I wanted to run 4 JBL's to 4 L5's. For burps ya know? Would there be a difference between that or 4 JBL's to 4 L7's?
I love the way the L7's look, but im just wondering if I should spend more $$$ to get the L7's.
